Pizza's always cost me more than $20.

I usually order Large Deep Dish Deluxe pizza's with buttercrust from Lou Malnati's

Perhaps he isn't selling little crap flat pizzas. Also I can eat half of a 14inch Lou's Deep dish when I'm hungry, I can eat a full papa john's or domino's 14 inch pizza and still have room for more.

3 large cheese pizzas for $20 near my house. I think the best deal was the 555 from Dominos. A medium pizza per person.

Wow. I can eat a lot, but I could NEVER finish a 14 inch pizza by myself. That'd be like ordering 2 half pound hamburgers at Red Robin!

Are you guys talking about basic menu prices or specials/coupons?

A small (10 inch) specialty pizza + drink is around $13 after tax here as well. Not just at our restaurant...but at Pizza Hut, Dominos, Ciro's, etc. I'm guessing because minimum wage is so high. Most people have no problem paying that around here. Restaurants are the same. I went to Applebee's the other day (I guess I'm comparing apples to oranges) and had a sandwich and a coke and wound up paying around $13 after tax. I wouldn't say a sandwich is of higher quality food than a specialty pizza.

Red Robin is a bad comparison though. They offer unlimited refills on fries and coke. Try Fuddruckers. $19 gets you 3 large burgers and a basket of fries.

I've got a pizza peel and a stone, so I usually make my own, but when there's no time, I just order whatever deal Round Table is having which, right now, is a large double pepperoni for $12.99. I seldom just order and pay menu price.

Yeah $16 isn't so bad for a large specialty pizza with a lot of toppings. Of course a lot of places consider 14" to be a large. I consider 16" to be a large, because that's what it is in just about every non-chain pizza place in NJ.

I don't defile my pizza with a lot of toppings though... just cheese, sauce and either pepperoni or bacon is all I want.

The price of pizza is pretty reasonable. I remember 15 years ago $8 was the standard price for a large pie around here. Now you get a pie for $10. That's not bad. (no toppings)

At Vito's Pizza and Beer, I can get a large for $16.

At Alberto's Pizza, I can get two larges for $16.

At Marcellos, I can get two larges for $22, and they're the best thing on the damn planet.

At Dominos, I can get 3 medium pizzas for $15.

At Infinitos, I can get UNLIMITED Italian themed pizza for $5 a head, with unlimited drink.

At the Hungry Parrot, I can get UNLIMITED eating-contest-grade pizza for like, $6 a head, with unlimited drink.

At Stevi B's Pizza, I can get UNLIMITED specialty pizza for $5 a head, with unlimited drink and UNLIMITED ICE CREAM!

14" is the standard size of a large pizza. I've seen restaurants where 14" was a medium, and restaurants where a 12" was a large. It all varies.

I don't know if anyone is familiar with Abby's pizza (chain out of Oregon I believe), but their 16" pizza's are called "Giants" and a single topping is around 20 dollars. We have 18" pizza's where you can get a single topping for $15.

Wait - did they bring the 555 deal back? That 777 deal they had going was the biggest piece of crap... I'd actually eat Domino's if they have the 555 deal.

Dude, pizza is not even worth ordering unless you do a special/coupon. I actually read a good article about it. Pizza prices 40 years ago were reasonable without specials. Now, if you don't do a special, you're probably not getting your money's worth. There are so many specials at any given time that it's really not hard at all to get what you want for cheaper.

And why the hell do you go to Applebee's? Their food isn't that good and costs way too much. Only Red Robin can get away with that, because they have a bottomless bag of fries.

It is in much of the country, but the standard size of a New York style pizza is 16".

that is too expensive. The toppings added to pizza arent near high quality, and the less oftenly used toppings(chicken, pineapple, etc.) are hardly ever replaced with new ones. (I used to work at a pizza place) the markup on pizza is big already. A $20 pizza? that pizza better have fresh chicken parm on it or something. Also, A large speciality pizza does not "EASILY" feed 3 people. It will feed 2.

I can get 2 medium supremes at pizza hut for $15 after printable coupon. That rules all. 1 pie for today, and 1 for tomorrow. My wife finds something else to eat.

We have, running in parallel, at different Dominos around town...

The 555 deal.
The 666 deal (I ****** you not. These are unlimited topping medium pizzas. A favorite was the "Meatpocalypse", which was topped with every meat on the menu)
The 777 deal (Crap.)

They *ALL* still have the 555 deal, as far as I'm aware.

I usually just get a large pepperoni w/extra cheese and light sauce from Little Caesar's for $5.55. It's cheap and tastes decent. If I want something better I'll just make my own.

Very true. There is NEVER a reason to pay full menu price for pizza. There are ALWAYS a good portion of coupons and usually a few deals to make the price of them much more reasonable. Pizza = expensive. But of course, so does all the food you get around here when you eat out :(

When I want it, I go to Sam's Club, grab a large frozen pizza and take it up front to the deli where they run it through the pizza oven. Then I'm at home enjoying an underrated pizza for $7.45. It's not as good as some of the mom & pop places but I think it's on par with PH and better than Domino's/PJ's.

Yeah, I think the OP's pizza is wayyy over-priced, but the local market may support such a price.

And, while cheese and meat are the most expensive ingredients in pizza, I think a lot of people would be amazed at how cheap mozzarella cheese is when it's purchased in bulk. Ditto for pepperoni, etc. And, by bulk, I don't mean 10 pounds :p :) We used to purchase mozzarella by the ton. I haven't been involved in the day-to-day operations for about a year now, but I believe the price for a pound of mozzarella is about $1.60. Milk prices have dropped quite a bit locally, so cheese may be back down to a dollar forty something again. A large pizza has perhaps 1 to 1 1/2 pounds of cheese on it. (closer to 1 pound for a large 16 inch) By the pound, pepperoni is expensive, somewhere between 2 and 3 dollars a pound. Of course, (and it's been a long time since curiousity got the better of me) there are about (9?) slices of pepperoni per ounce? i.e. most pizza shops have 50 cents worth of pepperoni on their pizza.

Oh, and for comparison's sake, a high quality 3 to 5 topping pizza in my area is about half the price of the OP's pizza. The comparisons to a meal at a fast food place aren't fair... a pizza by itself isn't a meal. Around here, you can get a pitcher of soda, a large pizza, and salad for 4 people for $20; sometimes with breadsticks thrown in as well.

How could they possibly charge that much!? The food costs alone for a large 1-topping with extra cheese would be around 4-5 dollars where I work. Must be low-quality?

None of the 18 inch pizzas around here even have 1-pound worth of cheese on them. That's a lot of cheese. So a high-quality 3-5 topping pizza should be around $8.50? The food cost alone to make that would be around $6 (for us around here). That's not good mark-up in the restaurant market.

I have done the $5 hot n ready at Little Caesars. The quality is about the same as Dominos. They don't deliver and are always busy around dinner time. Other then that I just buy frozen za when it is on sale.

Can normallly get a large pizza around here from a chain (P Hut, etc) for $10-$12 depending on what it is. Going out to a real pizza place woudl be more like $15-$18 I'd guess. This is in WI.

If people are buying it, then obviously it's not that bad of a price.

Tell them to get a better job.

Your thoughts? Do you think that's too much money? It's the going rate, but we get lots of complaints on our price (same price as Pizza Hut, Dominos, and Papa Johns).

Bah, that's a relatively good deal (assuming by specialty, you mean sheet pizza). Most places charge at least 23-28 after tax for a sheet pizza.
