Price of next-gen gaming? $1,710

well thinking along their same path of thought, that means you would need to spend $2000 just to watch a movie as well ...

what a stupid STUPID article, to say "oh you dont have HDTV you have to now go buy one just to use the system" and "oh you don't have a 5.1 surround system so you now have to go buy one just to play the system".

stupid STUPID STUPID!!! you don't NEED any of that crap to play a video game.

but not that i care, since i already have both 😛

The article clearly states that these items are luxuries that take full advantage of all the features of the new system.

I agree that most people probably won't have a htdv by the time the next gen comes out. These are the same group of people who still have a geforce2 trying to play modern day games.

I'll be sticking to PC Gaming

Yes, gaming on an HDTV w/Surround would be hot; but I still have yet to see many console games that are immersing as a high quality PC game. Halo 1/2, GTA's come to find, but that's about it

Let's see:
HDTV - check
Surround system - check

There's two-thirds of the cost I've already paid for.

the key word is "could"

the systems will cost money but so do high end computer parts when they get released so i just pretend buying a new console is like updating my video card or processor

this is the stupidest article of all time

if I really want to get the most out of my driving experience I guess its gonna cost me $750,000 to buy a mclaren f1

They forgot to factor in your house and/or rent. And electricity. And online internet bills. Man, they are so far off. It's more like $2.5K - $3K.

What a brilliant article. It has some concepts that were valid and worth discussing, but why put it under such a misleading title?

They cost a lot more than that

They went a bit far with speakers, but the HDTV argument is a good one. Regular TVs do 640x480. If you don't have or plan on soon getting an HDTV (hint: most people still don't have one), the biggest benefit of the next-gen consoles will be lost on you.

And the projector I'm currently wanting is about $670 shipped, and does 1/4HD, which should still look pretty good when it's 100" stretched across my living room wall. I've already got a decent receiver.

Well lets see, to get the best out of PC gaming, I'll need that 999$ video card recently announced for starters....

Lame article. Author should be punished!

that is like saying the TV is useful for only playing video games

cost of high end PC gaming $3000
because of course you are going to need 7.1 speakers
an Athlon FX 4000+ or whatever
2 GB memory
24" LCD
2x GF 6800 Ultras in SLI
and at least 400 GB in HD space
throw in a case, mobo, kb , sound card etc.

who cares

cost of next gen gaming $400 + games
to those that already own an HD TV

like i said in GH - when you're as far away from the bleeding edge as I am, you just don't give a crap. and i'm still an avid gamer with a full plate of gaming goodness to snack on. *shrugs*

edit: translation - i have no money for the good sh!t. 😛

A dumbass article if ever I saw one. They estimate an nice round 1000 for the TV (like you never needed a TV with the PS2) and end up with 'exactly' 1710. Why didn't they just say over 1500 or around 1700. Their quote of an exact number is very misleading.

The bundle pack for Sony's PSP costs $250, as opposed to the $99 initial price for a standalone Game Boy Advance.

Comparing apples to pears. How can you draw any objective conclusions from that statement.
