The article clearly states that these items are luxuries that take full advantage of all the features of the new system.

I agree that most people probably won't have a htdv by the time the next gen comes out. These are the same group of people who still have a geforce2 trying to play modern day games.

Yes, gaming on an HDTV w/Surround would be hot; but I still have yet to see many console games that are immersing as a high quality PC game. Halo 1/2, GTA's come to find, but that's about it

They went a bit far with speakers, but the HDTV argument is a good one. Regular TVs do 640x480. If you don't have or plan on soon getting an HDTV (hint: most people still don't have one), the biggest benefit of the next-gen consoles will be lost on you.

And the projector I'm currently wanting is about $670 shipped, and does 1/4HD, which should still look pretty good when it's 100" stretched across my living room wall. I've already got a decent receiver.

because of course you are going to need 7.1 speakers
an Athlon FX 4000+ or whatever
2 GB memory
24" LCD
2x GF 6800 Ultras in SLI
and at least 400 GB in HD space
throw in a case, mobo, kb , sound card etc.

I dont know where they get that horrible $1000 avg.

And I'm sure you can find a cheap surround sound system for under $250...but I think most people that have enough money to buy a PS3 or XBOX 360 should already have bought a nice surround sound a long time ago like myself!

A dumbass article if ever I saw one. They estimate an nice round 1000 for the TV (like you never needed a TV with the PS2) and end up with 'exactly' 1710. Why didn't they just say over 1500 or around 1700. Their quote of an exact number is very misleading.

The bundle pack for Sony's PSP costs $250, as opposed to the $99 initial price for a standalone Game Boy Advance.

Comparing apples to pears. How can you draw any objective conclusions from that statement.
