Price of motor oil gone up?

So in the last 4 - 5 months, has anyone noticed if the price of motor oil has gone up significantly? I changed the oil on my car this weekend and it was $75 for 7 quarts of mobile 1 and a mobile 1 filter. I remember it being closer to $60-$65 last time I did it.

Of course this was AutoZone prices. Sometimes I hit up Walmart since they're usually cheaper. However it was Sunday at 1pm and I needed to go buy the oil and filter and get back home and get it done. Walmart, with their 50 registers and only 10 open, is always backed up to the aisles and there's no getting in and out in under an hour.

I know the price of oil is always going up but it seemed like a big jump in a short time frame. Anyway, where do you get your oil to get the best price? Anyone buy online? I'd love to order a couple cases online somewhere to save a few bucks. The stuff doesn't go bad, so it can sit in my garage until I need it.

Seems a little expensive. I got 5 quarts of mobile 1 full synthetic for $26 about trip months ago. $7 for the filter.

Yes, oil HAS gone up in the past few weeks but $75 for 7 qts + filter seems excessive.
FWIW, Walmart has Mobile 1 in the 5 qt bottle for $30.95.
I just bought online (last week) 10 qts. of QS Ultimate from Advance Auto for $3.99 a qt with a rebate for $20 on 5+ qts and a $7 rebate for 5 qts x 2 so = $34 total. My final cost after tax should be $9.06. Generally I buy the 5 qt jug of this from Walmart for $21. I take it that your Walmart does not have an Auto Repair because if it does you can check out through there and save a ton of time.

Yeah I definitely took it up the ass. That's what I get for not shopping around. The 5.2 qt jug was $38 and the individual quart containers were $8 and change, I needed 2. Then the filter was like $13.

My GTO takes almost 7 quarts of oil, so that factors into it, but their prices were still high.

Yes, synthetic around here runs about $7 per quart when bought one by one. Much better to buy the 5 qt jug at Walmart as you will save a lot. Most cars only need 5 qts anyway. Sometimes, you can also catch deals at Autozone, Advance Auto or Pepboys .. keep an eye out for adds and stock up when you can. A decent filter will run between $5 and $10 depending on the brand (Mobil 1 filter is costly, but should be very good)

Yeah, my Walmart is just a Super Wal with no auto repair center. There is a sporting goods checkout in the back by the auto parts, but there's never anyone there. It's so slow to check out there I only go there at 10pm or later. Even then it takes a good 15-20 minutes. They suck. On the plus side, I give less of my money to the small business eating entity that is Walmart.

I lucked out on a deal for the filter. $5 off the mobile one with a 5 quart oil purchase. $12 filter so I got it for $7. But yeah 7 quarts for your ride would suck.

On a side note I put mobile full synthetic in my bike and for four quarts and a filter was $35 at employee cost! And it has to be replaced a lot quicker than my car.

OP your not shopping smart.

Wait for M1 to go on sale with a filter. 7 quarts right? So You buy 10 quarts for 60 bucks with two filters. So that leaves 3 quarts left over. Then Next time you buy oil during sale again for 30 bucks and you use the left over. From the original two deals you bought.

So 2 oil changes for 90 bucks.

M1 filter K&N filter, Bosch or Purolator filters are all good you dont need to worry, and most of the time they are bundled with those filters.

Conventional oil price used to be $2/qt, now is $3.5 and up
Syn oil price used to be $5/qt, now is $7 and up

I usually wait until the oil is on sale then I stock up. Oil have 2-5 years shelf life.

Geez I didn't think about doubling up on the 5 qt jugs. Good call. I'll watch for the sales next time.

Oil prices have gone up but you don't know how to shop.
Advanced auto parts had 5 qt Castrol syn and a premium filter for $30-$5 rebate last month.
They have the same deal for valvoline this month.

Advanced has Quaker State syn for $3.99 which is $20 for 5 qts.(and there is a $7 rebate for 5 qt).
You can also order online at Advanced and pick up for free and save 20%.
I bought a bunch of Purolator pureone filters(which is just about as good as any filters out there) for $5(on sale) - 20%. Plus there there is a $3 rebate for up to 4 per household.
So each filter will cost me $1 each + 5qt QS synthetic at $13. Equal $14 for a full synthetic oil change.
Bought 4 for $16 and there is a $3 rebate for up to 4 per household.

Yes, it has gone up, but like some posters have said already, check local deals before buying. Every month at least one of the major auto chains runs 5Qt Synthetic jug + filter on sale for $25-30 after rebates, less if you want conventional. Just check oil thread on slickdeals when it's time to change oil, you're bound to find some kind of a deal. Just yesterday I got 4 Purolator PureOne filters for $18 - $12 rebate at Advance Auto Parts, and I also got Walmart to honor $10 autozone coupon on Mobil 1 oil, so I ended up paying $18 otd for 5Qt Mobil 1 5w30 Synthetic jug.

I'm a filter snob and will only use Wix brand filters. Have to get them at O'Reilly I think. I get my mobil 1 from walmart also.

Purolator pureone are one of the best filter out there and they are half the price of the premium filters.

My father in law got me turned on to them and its a mental thing with me. I just like them, trust them, and use them.

Last week my Porsche dealer quoted me $750 for what amounted to an oil change and a pollen filter replacement. I have no sympathy for you guys. 😛

When you factor in the cost of oil $15 + $5 filter, a $20 oil change at a reputable place is a bargain.

Why waste your time unless you're using synthetic?

Just changed oil last week, went with RP this time since I got a better deal on it. Was about $15 cheaper for 9qts (car holds a ridiculous 8.8qts) and a k&n oil filter shipped to my door than I could find the usual M1 & filter locally since I missed out on the last autozone 5qt M1 & filter sale. Total was $86 and some change which honestly I didn't think was that bad, especially considering that including shipping.

Because I hate other people working on my cars. 🙂

Also, during an oil change, I typically check the other fluids, replace the air filter if needed, normal maintenance stuff. And I use synthetic.

I love Wix also but as others have stated PureOne Filters are very, very good too!
Check out discountfleetsupply.com as they have some great prices on Wix filters.
