i'm moving there for a year and not sure if i should just buy everything minus case+psu+monitor here and get the rest there...
is stuff more expensive or cheaper, generally?...and can i find the good stuff there?

anyone actually living there and can give me a few comp store names?

I can give you a little bit of info on the mainland, im thinking they're pretty similar.

Domestic hardware is cheap.
Foreign hardware is pricey.
Monitors are *MAD* expensive! (Over here samsung 17 inch dynaflat 220$... 19 incher around 450$)
Videocards are relativley normal pricewise..
everything else seems to be similar to the USA.

By foreign hardware being pricey I mean expect a visiontek Geforce4 to be significantly more expensive than a Gainward one. If you can find them at all..

awesome...thanks for the info.
i'll just buy everything there...a shame that monitors are so expensive...weird...i wonder if i can pick up an LCD for relatively cheap there?...hmmm.
either way, as long as everything else is quite similar i'll have no problems...no need lugging cmop hardware onto the plane.

most things you can get in the US/Canada are cheaper because
1. space is cheaper in the US/Canada, the warehouse/retail store rent cost is much higher in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong. online vendors don't need to have a retail store, so lower cost.
2. there are rebate, coupon, price match, price error oftenly.

ok, aside from the coupon craze of north america (since i never use them anyway), are the prices really that different?

yes, less room for storing goods, but less imports as well - a lot of the stuff is manufacturing directly in taiwan or close by.
u're not merely speculating about price differences, are u?...

i'm searching for definite facts...perhaps ads from actual taiwanese stores in english papers or something...lemme dig around a bit.
