I have been looking for an upgrade to my 7900gs. I am keeping the budget below $150.00 since I don't 'game' all the time. I was seriously thinking about 8800gt (512) since the prices are dropping to around ~120-130 with the soon to be gt200 release.

Any chances of the 8800gtx or 9800 series fitting into my price range any time soon? Or should I just bite on the deals being offered for the 8800gt?

Thanks

In a word - unlikely.
However as you said it's a good time to get a 8800gt/gts as they're pretty decent back for buck right now.

XFX PVT88PYSF4 GeForce 8800 GT 512MB with ZALMAN cooler - $140AR:

Something like the above xfx card should oc well & be much more quite as well, unless you're willing to go to $200 then maybe you should wait 2 weeks to see how the new Ati 4850 measures up.

Nope, pretty much no chance at all.

8800GTX is at around $280 and 9800GTX at around $300 now...the GTX 260 and GTX 280 are supposed to be ~$450 and ~$650 respectively, there is no reason for prices on those cards to drop when they will both already be way below the prices of the new chips. Plus they are probably at the threashold now of profitability.

well, both of those cards will go down due the the 4850 at 200$ and just the fact that they are "last gen"...
But I don't think it will go down to 150$...

We are already seeing some drops...I just picked up the 9800GTX KO edition from newegg for $289, which is around a $45 drop from a couple days before.

why wait for more expensive hardware? should have bought the good 8800 gt/gts a long time ago....if you need something now to play your best games you go and get it .

ECS 8800gts $167 after rebate. so i can imagine that dropping to $150 after release of ATI cards. And since 8800gts is almost on par with 9800gtx, you might as well get that.

What about prices for the 512MB 8800GT? Think they'll fall much more? I kind of want to get one right now while my 8800GTS 320MB is still worth something (it'd be basically a free upgrade).

IIRC, there is a midrange GT200 card coming out right away, so expect the 8800GT and related products to be gone around that time.

I think 9800gtx, 8800gtx will drop some more but I don't think these sub $200 cards are going to drop considerably. Once you start dwindling at the $100 mark the price doesn't drop too much unless the card is ancient.

I haven't heard any info from anybody about this. The midrange for nvidia will be g92-based cards (9800gtx, 9800gt, etc). It is likely to get hammered by 4850/4870.

@op: keep your eyes open for deals in the coming weeks. If theRookie can provide you with a link to the 8800gts 512 for $167 AR then that should be a nice option, but also check out 4850 when it arrives.

What often happens when a new generation of products come out is that the previous generation may drop in price a little bit to clear out inventory, but then that's it. No more product. For instance, instead of dropping the selling price of the 7900 series, Nvidia just stopped making them. The thing is that an 8600GTS gets almost (but maybe not quite) the same performance as a 7900 series card, but at a lower manufacturing cost. During the life of a computer product of course pricing drops, but it doesn't continue forever. Same thing for other products such as CPUs. That's why you can't buy a new Core 2 Duo E6400 for $90 just because a $135 E7200 is much faster. Nope, the older product just gets discontinued.

I'm kind of in the same boat, but am looking to stay in the $180-$220 range. The new nvidia cards due out next week look nice, but since the prices are going to be out of range at launch, I am leaning towards getting a 8800GT or GTS. I can always get a newer card down the road. The 8800's should be able to play most games right now, with the exception of Crysis (on high 1680x1050 good at frame rates), paired with 4GB and C2D E8400, correct?

The two cards I'm looking at are the EVGA 512-P3-N802-AR GeForce 8800GT Superclocked 512MB for $170 at NE or the MSI NX8800GTS 512M OC GeForce 8800GTS (G92) 512MB for $210. I'm leaning towards the EVGA since it has a lifetime warranty and I've never owned an MSI card, so I'm not sure what to expect.

don't buy anything until you see 4850 pricing and performance. it is rumored to be ~ 9800gtx but cost $199. even if you decide to go with nvidia, their prices will have to go down in response. either way, you still win by waiting until june 23. :)
