Price Mistake of the day 3/1/03

PMOTD = "Price Mistake of the Day" = "Ooops, we have 'accidentally' listed this item at a price comparable to other websites rather than the inflated SSP." = "This isn't really a mistake, it's just a cheesy way of marketing stuff that's really not that cheap".

Sorry, but I don't like Buy.com . I don't like their $10/call customer service, and I don't like their "free" shipping for which they charge for "handling" and then take 14-21 days to get it to you via mule train. (Actually there is no postal service that takes that long, buy.com just sit on your order for a couple of weeks to punish you for not coughing up for S&H).

$10/call customer service? Details please.

I've had good luck with ordering things from Buy.com; however, I do object to their "handling charge" for their free shipping orders.

hm i've never encountered a handling charge for their free shipping stuff. and i ordered something this morning. also i always get my free shipping stuff within 1 wk of ordering. never takes 14-21 days, that's just a scare tactic.

It depends on which part of the store you purchase from. The following is from their site:

Handling Fee
Applies to cover the cost to process and fulfill buy.com orders purchased from the Computers, Software, Electronics, and Clearance stores.

Basket Totals Handling Fee
0 - $24.99 $ .95
$25.00 - $49.99 $1.95
$50.00 - $99.99 $2.95
$100.00 - $199.99 $3.95
>$200 $4.95

In the good old days buy.com had a large call center that you could call to ask questions, deal with problems, etc. After they bottomed out they went to an email customer service center. You can still call them but they want to charge you $10 no matter what you are calling about. They use this call charge method to keep their customer service center costs low. They did this along with adding the free shipping with a handling charge, increasing their prices and reducing the number and amount of coupons and discounts. They also started charging a shipping charge in their clearance section and use low end dealers to supply items for their clearance section. All of these changes have kept them in business but they lost a lot of business from folks around here because of the changes. I'm surprised they are still in business.

wow this is hot, forget that 27" sony i wanted for $399 i rather have a smaller tv with a crappy built-in dvd/vcr combo, hmm can't wait for their next price mistake. Maybe they'll be selling some DDR memory at bac kwhen they were still expensive...

my friend bought the same tv last year from a retail store, the dvd player broke on it and now the vcr went too. be careful with multi-unit devices.

I never heard of handling fee or the customer service charge....but if it is true, then screw them. I buy from them simply because they are close to where I live, and I usually get my stuff relatively quickly.

Ok, for the people who have issues with Buy.com, the TV can be found here from Bandh photo video for $499. Pricegrabber was showing their shipping to be about $53 to Memphis which is a $10 less than Buy.com. Additionally, their resellerrating is 8.9/179 reviews.

I can never figure out those "handling" charges....
Based on the price of the item? So, it's harder to handle a small $150 motherboard than a heavier and bulkier $50 item??
