Price increase on Intel Quad Core CPUs

I was very close to pulling the trigger on a Q9550 as they have been at about $220 at Newegg. I have even heard of people getting them for $169 ish at MicroCenter (not aware of any in Texas).

So this morning, I noticed that the Q9550 has gone up and the new Q9505 - which seems to be a lower cache version of it is now $229.

Not really sure where else to look and I also wonder if this might be based on the weakening US dollar as CPUs are all made in Asia (AFAIK).

Can anyone shed some light?

I have been wondering to myself if - at least for us in the US - we might actually see some price increases on computers (aside from normal DRAM commodity ups and downs). I was guessing it would be another year or so.

On the other hand, maybe this is just an anticipatory spike to gouge people who might be doing panic upgrades for Windows 7...

Speaking from the UK, RAM prices are slowly creeping up and have been for a while, along with a number of other components... it's frustrating because now is the right time to build a new PC - Win7, DX11 cards, great price/performance ratios from competition - but absolutely the wrong time from an exchange rate view.

Especially frustrating as I've had a build priced up for a few weeks now but not yet got the money, and it keeps creeping up in cost!

I've been wondering the same thing lately, dollar weakening playing a role in rising consumer prices for computer parts, as I've noticed the base-level price for 1TB harddrives has risen from ~$75 to not ~$85 over the course of the past month or two.

It's a reasonable question really.

1. I want to go to the high end i7 or isnt there an i9 coming?, I did, I would want an HT processor, tri channel, etc so it would be much more.

2. Also, I want to do an epic i7 system. My PSU is a Corsair 430W and my GPU is a 4850 1GB so there are more upgrades needed

3. By upgrading my E5200, I can put the E5200 in my sons machine which is a low end Celeron 1500 (2.2Ghz dual core) and pass the Celeron to my dad who runs a 3.2Ghz Prescott.

4. Budget is not unlimited - especially for people with a family. Sure, it's "just" $200 more, but you can literally keep saying that until you spend thousands of dollars.

5. I want to do some encoding work so the Q9550 with a mild OC will show a big improvement over my E5200 @ 3.5Ghz

6. Also, your $370 upgrade is more likely to cost $400 by the time you get a HSF, pay shipping and buy quality parts and it implies buying one of the cheapest motherboards and low end RAM which is not my style.

Lowered supply + stable demand = price increase. I'm presuming here that the C2Q production is done or significantly drawing down with more resources and units being pushed towards i5 and i7. People tend to be willing to pay a hefty premium for the maximum processor for each socket type historically. I'll give a couple of examples :

Socket 939 Athlon X2 4800+ is stupidly expensive, around the $200 mark quite often.

Pentium D 900 series, this awful flamethrowing processor still sells for relatively high $, I sold a PD-945 + cooler for almost $80 recently on Ebay.

It seems insane to use because much better processors can be had for the same $ now, and sometimes even an entire platform + cpu + memory (like in the case of the s939 4800 x2), but a lot of people might have a combination of little time / experience in doing a platform upgrade on an existing system, along with a need to get a performance boost on something like a S939 3200+ or S775 Prescott single core. It gets particularly important to have a drop-in upgrade for someone that has a system where the OS + tons and tons and tons of software is already loaded and functioning fine, quite often a new platform pretty much forces a fresh or repair OS install in my experience.

Sounds like the quad upgrade would be best for you since you could pass those CPU's to your family. If that is the case I would go for a Q9400. I had one before and they are great chips. I was running it @3.75ghz with pretty low voltage. It was more than enough CPU I just fell for the I need a i7 hype. It would save you a little over the 9550. Or even finding a good used quad on the for sale forum would be good.

I didn't know that - thanks. I thought MC was only back East.

I will look into the 9400 as well. Really, anything I can get to around 3.3 or 3.5 without too much trouble would be great.

I have a Gigabyte P35-DS3L and my system is 100% rock stable with the E5200 @3.5 so if I can get a Quad near that speed, I will be super happy.

Run, don't walk into your nearest microcenter if you still want a q9550. The $169 + tax is still the cheapest q9550 avail new anywhere.(without rebates and "waiting for my money" gimmicks)

First two reasons why the prices are going up IMO

1 - Short quantity - supply & demand
2 - gouging for the holiday sales... yes. Xmas is almost here people and a business will think that before you do

There's one right off the central expressway just north of LBJ (take springcreek exit, head south, it's right before Midpark).

MC is still about 200 miles from where I am.

I signed up for Bing cash but ewiz.com does not seem to be participating and even with the Bing cash, ewiz still seems to have the best price at about $205ish shipped.

Super frustrating to know it's only $169 at MC - but with tax, I guess it would still be about $185 so whats the difference?

I can also get a Q6600 for $169 shipped but then, I think the 9 series have all the cool virtualization hoodoo that I might wish I had at some point and the heat and power draw are not that exciting.

Maybe I should just troll the sales forum here and buy from a forum member :p

Back to waiting. And watching.

look under store superbiiz

I just replaced my 6600 with a 9550, just trading some processors around with my nephew, and it runs much cooler and overclocks much farther. It's good to be the purchasing agent for the family.
