Price Dropping?

A couple of weeks ago I was debating whether or not to spend about 1600 dollars on a spanking new rig, with most of the latest hot items like Raptor HD, ATI X800XT, etc. I decided to wait for the price to drop a bit since 1600 is a bit steep for me, now I am wondering around what time will prices start dropping to a decent level so I can start ordering these parts? I know some items like the video card probably won't drop too much since it's in such hot demand, but overall, when will prices drop. Thanks for the help in advance.

They're always dropping. However, the X800 and Raptor probably won't drop significantly for some time, maybe even till next year. It's all a matter of whether a superior product is released.

X800XT is top of the line, so those won't drop until another card comes out at least. Dunno about the Raptors, I'm just gonna get an SATA because I don't think the speed is worth the extra hundred bucks, the sacrifice in memory (about 130 gigs down the drain), and the noise.

Oh, I see. Someone was telling me how about a week or two after Thanksgiving, prices for most parts will start dropping a bit so I was hoping that there is a period of time every year that the price drops a noticeable amount. So basically, I should wait till I can't wait any longer to order the parts? With WoW coming out and HL2 out, I'm getting rather anxious.

i'd go ahead and take the plunge, prices wont be too much lower, and in the time you are waiting, youd be enjoying your new rig instead.

When will prices for computer parts start dropping?

The day after you buy all your stuff that's when the price drops.😉

I kid you not this always happens to me,price always drops so you're better off buying stuff when you need it & dont worry about future price drops.

For some parts, their prices are very predictible. Take Intel CPUs for example. Intel drops their CPU prices one rung each quarter (~ every 3 months). A chip that costs $417 now will cost $278 after the price cut. A chip that costs $278 now will cost $218 after the price cut. A chip that costs $218 now will cost $178 after the price cut, etc. Note: this is the cost to companies that buy from Intel. You don't buy from Intel. Thus companies will pass the savings on when they choose to pass them on. Typically the result is that prices gradually drop just before Intel cuts prices, they plunge, and then they slowly level off after 3 weeks or so. Intel's next price cut is late Jan / early Feb.

Other components are completely unpredictible. Memory is a great example. Memory costs are highly volitile just like the stock market. One day memory prices could be up, and the next day they could be down. Supply and demand plays a big role. If demand is weak for the holiday season, prices will drop. If demand is strong, prices may rise. Like the stock market generally goes up in the long run, memory prices generally go down in the long run. But on any specific week or month, no one really knows (unless there was some major news like an earthquake distroying a memory factory or some major lawsuit).

Hard drives are in between. They are more of a steady price drop, but with some fluxuations.

Amen brudda!

I wouldn't expect any major price drops with Christmas around the corner. It seems that computers aren't in the price "freefall" we saw a few years ago - but just a steady decrease - meaning you could wait yourself to death.

As for a X800XT, top of the line everything - it will always be "too expensive". You go top of the line and you always pay a premium. however, you can put together a nice gaming computer for a good deal less. Heck, I just purchased my latest computer with Pentium 4 3.2 Ghz, 1 Gb DDR2, X800SE, 160 Gb SATA HD, 16X DVDRW and 19" LCD FP for $1048. That machine should play HL2 nicely.

Noise? Raptors are very quiet.

Hmm interesting. However I'd pick higher DBA over worse frequency. I can handle more soft noise than less hard noise.

Feb or March of next year. Christmas season is not usually the best time to buy parts. But anytime is good time if you need it now.
