Ginta, search for "Model#. ME-320U2" on this page. It's the fourth item from the bottom.

Then, click on the see "See It" link among the description of the above item, which will bring you to this page.. The 2nd bulleted point on the product box seems to suggest that the enclosure supports USB1.1/2.0/IEEE1394. I emailed Newegg's CS to ask if the enclosure indeed supports USB2.0 AND Firewire, and here is what I got:

Of course, my gripes are that there aren't any "product link" or "detailed specs" links. The "see it" links is the only one available and it seems to suggest that it does indeed support usb2/firewire. What do you think?

If you go through the images, they have a picture on the back of the unit. I only see one 'port' on the back. I assume that it is USB 2.0. Some of the other models have clearer images of back of the enclosers, showing just a 2.0 interface.

Mine is noisy too. But what bothered me is that I had some problem when I tried to write to this external HD.

For example, when I run VirtualDub to edit a file on this drive, the light became red and there was no response for a second.

Then an error message appeared:

"Windows was unable to save all the data for the file \Device\Harddisk\Volume7\$Mft.The data has been lost.

This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere".

Then I lost the drive letter in the Windows Explorer.

I had to power off this baby and power on again. The drive reappeared. This problem is occured randomly.

Can anyone help me?

BTW, I use the 1394 port, not USB2.0. The drive is a Maxtor 40G. I tried this Maxtor in an ADS 1394 case(Oxford 911 chip)

ran it for almost 10 days, nothing wrong happened. Could it be the Ti chipset's problem?

My system is Windows 2000 pro.

I think although the enclosure combo from CompGeeks sounds like a great deal, it will not be as fast and reliable as the ones that have Oxford chipsets or popular name brands like ADSTech. Sorry I'm not sure how to solve your problem there. Can anyone else shed some light on this?

Btw, someone already asked this question, but did not get a reply. How does the Firewire side of this enclosure compare with an enclosure with the Oxford 911 chipset? Thanks.

kopelen, thanks anyway.

As for the comparison, I did not run Sandra to test the HD performance. But as I copied video files of 700M each to and from

the external HD, I cound not feel speed difference between Ti and Oxford 911 chipset, IMO.

But that ADs case is $99.99, too expensive. :(

The tech guys of Compgeeks have no idea. They just said I can RMA it.

Well, I think I will keep it and find the answer.

I was wondering about that too. I finally realized that it means they make a USB and a Firewire model. I don't think one enclosure supports both.

Yeah, i think so too .. but it's kinda stupid to print that "Firewire and USB2.0" feature in front of the box.

hi ppls,

were any of you able to get this installed in XP? comp geeks says it does, but when i run the file it says "cannot install b/c this is XP"

???

Works fine under XP for me. You don't need to install the software from the CD. Just plug it in and turn it on and Windows will detect it as another drive.

Just so that no one gets confused:

THere are two separate debates going on here. People saying "it does not support both USB and firewire" are referring to a DIFFERENT enclosure, not the one in the title (and linked to in the first post.)

Couple people PM'd me about that, so just clearing it up. The Enclosure from the first post does indeed support BOTH usb2.0 and firewire.

I've been using one that handles both 5.25" and 3.5" device's on USB2 and done some benchmarks with the HD's...do not waste an ATA 66/100/133 HD on it as it'll only handle ATA33 speed or less...still yet great instrument to use on either USB 1.1 or 2.0

I have a pretty crazy question, maybe somebody has heard of this... My brother bought an external polaroid burner from officemax last week for $75, and it appears just to be their regular burner, but thrown into a usb 2.0 enclosure. I open it up and find no directions *except a direction sheet that discussed only how to install the enclosure, and mentioned supporting a HDD. The directions did not mention anything about Polaroid or using the enclosure only with the cd rw. I was wondering if it could be the case that their "external" burner is really a usb 2.0 enclosure bundled with a cd rw. if that were the case, they would be selling the 5.25 enclosure and a burner for $75 + tax. Any thoughts?

DrOrville, I had purchased that same Polaroid external burner, It turns out to be a BTC burner and they are junk. So I took it back.
Before I had decided to take it back though, I had taken it apart and hooked up a Hard drive. It worked fine but a bit slow as I expected for
USB 1.1 (my system), Anyways I do not believe that this particular burner is worth keeping...It was skipping on my CD's even when I hooked it to
an IDE port. BTC's were never very reliable for me (I've had 2 BTC CD-Roms)

I just thought that $80.00 for this particular enclosure with a junky burner was not worth it. Also checking out there web site just did not set me at ease,
And Office Max rebates have a lot to be desired, you may never receive them without a fight.

So I just returned it....

this thing is hella loud... is it possible to replace the fan to make it quieter? any suggestions?

For anyone who were having problems w/ the 5.25 Combo Enclosure, remember to take the jumpers off the hard drive/cdrom. I had to play around w/ it for a bit -setting it on master, then slave, and finally was about to give up, I decided to try it without jumpers and it worked.

Does it work as plug and play for all of you?

The enclosure and hd only work when I turn them on before turning on the computer. It could be that I have the jumpers set on master, but I'm not sure. I'm running it through firewire, but I'm not sure if its supposed to be plug and play...

edit: I have the enclosure from the first post, the firewire and usb 2.0 for 3.5" hds

Works fine as pnp over here. I can have it off when I boot, turn it on when in Windows, and after a few seconds it will be detected. I also have the jumper set to master, using FW connection.

I would also love to know if anyone has any suggestions for a replacement fan...

My experience:

3.5" Enclosure: set HD to master
5.25" enclosure: set CDRW to slave

All works well. I am using 1394, not USB2.0.

Both my CD-RW and DVD-RAM/-R (different Firewire enclosures) are set as master.

I guess it depends on the CDRW drive brand, or maybe I am wrong.

If I set my CyberDrive 16X12X40 to master, the enclosure will not even power on. Once I set it to slave, it works well.
