Got mine from Newegg, no dead pixels but there is some light backlight leakage on both the left and right edges of the screen. It's only visible if the color on either edge is black. It seems like it's just part of the monitor, is anyone else experiencing this? (one of the user reviews on Newegg also mentioned this)

Apart from that, awesome monitor at an awesome price.

I bought the Senergy 714 from Newegg, and it arrived yesterday. Used dvi connection. Was somewhat leary about purchasing this monitor because of sad rebate experience in past with Soyo, and I could absolutely find no reviews on this baby, other than the Newegg opinions.
On bootup on the black background windows XP page I noticed the backlight leaking around the edges and felt panic. When my desktop picture came up it was beautiful. Great color, clear, crisp. I really love this monitor. At $224 delivered (if I get my rebate) this will be a super deal. I would definitely purchase another Princeton monitor in the future. Plus it has a sturdy, substantial feel and cosmetically looks good on my desk.

I really really want this to be my 1st LCD!! As my Xmas present to myself! But 2 users on NewEgg said that at res below 1280x1024, the screen is distorted! Help...is this true?!

This is true of most LCDs. They have a native resolution, in this case 1280x1024. When you run a resolution other then the native, you can get distortions becuase it doesn't always matchup to the pixels.

Is is bad though? Cause I have bad eyes, so my 20in CRT runs a res of 960X720 to make things bigger. And i want to get an LCD cause its supposed to be better on eye strain. But if lower res on LCD is going to look horrible, should I just stick to my CRT? Help?

Go into the display properties window (just right click on your desktop I think) and you can set a default font size so that text doesn't look too small on a higher DPI screen.

If you want to use something other than the natural dpi of the display, then crt is going to look better than lcd.

Reply to gurleeme. I was also concerned about the distortion issue which I read about in the Newegg opinions, and I also wanted larger icons, print, etc. on my screen. I knew if I had to put my res at 1280x1024 it would be to small for my tired old eyes, so I called Princton Graphics tech support. They said to go into display before hooking up new LCD and set HZ to 60 and put res at 800x600 which is large enough for those of us who don't see well. Then shut down computer and hook up new LCD which I did to my dvi connection. I booted up and my picture was not distorted but clear, crisp, and beautiful. I then went back into display to insure HZ was at 60 and res at 800x600. So i had no distortion issue, loved my picture at 800x600, had no dead pixels, and would definitely buy this monitor again.

For $350 delivered, after a $100 rebate, you can get a Princeton LCD19D 19" LCD from Newegg.
It's beautiful, and it has a 8-bit per pixel color, whereas the 714 only has 6-bit per pixel color. That means the 714 has to "interpolate" many colors.
The main advantage of the 714 is that it has a faster refresh rate (due to 6-bit color), which is only beneficial to people who play fast games. If you aren't in that group, then you would be better off with a slower refresh rate and better color rendering.
If you can't afford the LCD19D, then keep looking for a better deal on a 17" monitor.

One nice thing about the LCD monitors is that you can comfortably pull them right up next to your keyboard.
I highly recommend a 19" LCD if you can afford it. Heck, it'll probably last for many years, so the extra cost per year will be very small. And if you get a 17", you may have a tough time justifying the switch to a 19", even though you'll know you want one bad.

The secret of a hot deal is knowing when to buy, and thats the happy intersection between what you need, when you need it, and a good price. 17" DVI top of the line model with full 3 yr warranty Shipped for $220 AR works just fine for me. The LCD19D for $350 is the midline model, the 19" Senergy is still $750, which is OK I guess if you can't afford a $4k 32" LCD.

I am just real pleased to check an item off my list.

Hey guys,

Am I losing a noticeable amount of viewing area by going from a 19" CRT to a 17" LCD?

I currently use a 3 yr old Samsung 955df. It's a 19" CRT but I really am only viewing 17.5" diagonal X 14 1/8" wide.

What's the actual viewing area on a 17" LCD?

I like this monitor but am debating going with a 19"LCD. I am not a gamer.

LCD monitor sizes are accurate. So a 17" LCD measures 17" diagonally, etc.
17" LCDs and 19" LCDs both have native resolution of 1280 X 1064. The only difference is pixel size.

Since you're not a gamer, the 714 is not for you. It has a 6-bit color display which gives it a faster refresh rate, which means less ghosting during fast games.
Most LCD monitors have 8-bit color displays.

well i think most people won't be able to tell the difference between the 6-bit and 8-bit anyway. anyone out there seen a 6-bit next to an 8-bit and can comment on this?

Cool...ordered 12/21 Newegg, arrived this morning! And at 800x600, its bright and sharp for my bad eyes, sweet!!!

Got mine today from PcConnection, very nice. Out of the box its very bright with high contrast, set to sell off the shelf at CC etc., but a quick adjustment and it suits me just fine.

15 day rebate postmark isn't that uncommon, maybe sucks, but it does get me filling out stuff and mailing immediately. At least it isn't buried in the fine print like some are, with huge rebate period in large bold letters and 15 day postmark hidden below so you don't notice until its too late.

OTOH many times if I miss the 15 day postmark I just return the item and tell them the rebates no good.

Last friday I placed an order with buy.com for this monitor. I used a 5% coupon and with free shipping and no tax the price ended up being 289 - 75 = 214 after rebate. Tuesday I received an email saying that the order had not been shipped yet, so I contacted them to find out why. Well it turns out the monitor is on backorder, and they "only update the site every 24 hours" (yet it's shown as being in stock since friday, and still shows in stock to this day). So I'm trying to figure out where to go with this. I can either sit and wait, which is fine since there's another month on the rebate, or order from somewhere else. I've avoided ordering an LCD from newegg because of their dead pixel policy. I see people ordering it from PcConnection, but I can't find any way to avoid paying another 20 bucks for shipping from them. So, I end up with 319 - 75 = 244 after rebate if I go with them, which is about 30 bucks more than I want to spend. Any suggestions?

Wouldn't it make sense that the purchase date would be the date I was charged, not the date the order was placed? They won't charge my CC until the order ships, so I assumed I was fine as far as that was concerned.

I placed an order last Sunday for the monitor at buy.com and got the same response as NitroTurtle did when I called. It didn't state 'out of stock' when I ordered it and it doesn't now. I called back and they said they would standby the rebate, whatever that means. NEVER AGAIN buy.com......

the problem is the rebate is from princeton i think, not buy.com, so i don't know what they are talking about when they say they stand by it. I avoided that garbage and went with the egg.
