I am just curious as to how one can prevent unauthorized access to his/her computer. Assuming there's no trojans, worms or any other internet-related hacks, what are the options? For starters, the bios password can easily be taken care of by the CMOS jumpers... and how good is the WinXP login password protection?

Slap a password onto it in the bios, then slap a limited user account and use it most of the time, when you are not installing stuff or changing settings, to help protect yourself. WIndows login password can be easily reset using a custom Linux Boot disk password ressetting utility.

For physical security? Not much, if I can have physical access I can do basically whatever I want to get the data. If you want to protect the data from physical theft then you need to look into encryption.

For network access enable as little as possible, always be suspicous and don't be an idiot.

It still has regular password entry.

Better way is to put the hd on cartridge. She can easily remove it from the bay and store it in a locked drawer.

Abit Secure-IDE or SiiG equivalent. Pull the "key" dongle, put it in your pocket when you leave. (Unsure if you can do that with the system "live" though, probably not. Should "Hibernate" before doing so then.)
