Prevent forced updates

I tried opening a game I dont play very often and it says I need to update in order to play. All I wanted to do was play a game not play stupid games with some stupid updater that freezes at 62%. How do I prevent apps from having the necessary permissions to check for updates? Or prevent apps from having any internet access or is there any other reasonable solution to this ever growing problem of not being able to simply use the app I purchased without this constant update hassle?

I'm not aware of a bulk way to do it. Each application should have an option to disable updates.

For example in Firefox it's Firefox > Preferences > Advanced > Update

It would help to have more information like:
What game?
What device?
What OS?

There is nothing you can do to stop some app pinging home to find out if there is an update, or send usage data/ad tracking. Unless, of course, you jailbreak:
