Saw this at Engadget:

It's a camera you mount either in the windshield or rear window of your car. It records video constantly, deleting the previous recording to make room for the new. When certain conditions occur (loss of control, impact, manual trigger), it saves the last 30 seconds, timestamps, and watermarks it. The footage can then be used to identify a hit-and-run driver or to determine fault in an accident.

I've always thought something like this would be really cool. Have a series of cameras in your car that fire off in the event your car is struck while moving or parked. With electronics being as cheap as they are (and getting cheaper), I'm not surprised there hasn't already been something like this offered in higher-end luxury cars.

Seems like it could be used against the owner of the car in some cases.

yeah, thats what i was thinking.
soo ill QFT that statement.

hide it, have it encrypt on the fly, and only use it if it shows the other guy at fault, otherwise don't mention it, and if they want the footage "oh, sorry, looks like it was corrupted."

Yeah, it could be used against the owner of the car. There's a little more info here:

I don't think they forward data to the insurance companies automatically, you may have to request it. In the case where you were at fault, you could just not request it be sent, although I suppose you could be ordered to turn it over in court.

My original idea (before I saw this) was a series of cameras that could be used while you were out of the car and it was parked to catch hit and run drivers, with some sort of manual trigger for when you were driving if you wanted to fire it off. The idea wouldn't be to help with insurance directly, it'd be to track down the person who hit your car by having a plate number of no one was around.

Hell no. I don't like this idea at all. I'd be in jail now if something like that was attached to my car.
