Your Price $204.81 *
Usually Ships Same Day
CDW Part No. 314280

Dont want to toot my own horn. but this is my price when I logged in with my cdw account. Also if I call up the price could drop as low as 5 - 25$ cheaper. I made contact with my buddy at cdw.com and he says CDW's cost is 195$ thats what I can get it for. Its there "LANDA" cost. Also the Lucent ORINOCO IEEE Range Extender is only 69.23$.

Did some checking, only 1 other site is cheaper. nxgen @ 194.40 + 4.20+ shipping.

Also you could switch brands 3Com Home Wireless Gateway for 139.66$ and then get a 3Com AirConnect 11Mbps Wireless LAN PC Card for 77.51$ or CDW has 3Com 11Mbps Wireless LAN PC Card w/XJACK for 106.29 but you can get it here 3Com special deal for 79$

I think this may be a price drop. Insight.com has it for $217.99 with shipping as low as $7.99. The product is here.

Orinoco is definately the way to go though if you're looking for wireless gear. We just got the AP-2000 and it works great so far with our Orinoco gold cards.

<< How does this compair with Linksys, netgear?

thanks
>>

Orinoco, by far, has been regarded as top-end wireless networking equipment by many professionals, including myself. The company I work for has been implementing them in the Chicago Public School systems for the past year or so now with few problems. I've dealt with DLink, Intel, SMC, and a few others in the past; Orinoco cards had the most consistent performance. If it's 802.11b stuff you're looking for, Orinoco's the way to go. If it's 802.11a equipment, I'd recommend Intel's PRO/Wireless 5000 series stuff.

CDW's headquarters is right down the road from me in Vernon Hills. IL. In my experience they have been goofy on pricing. Some things are sky high, but others are very competitive, if not the best price around. It's hard to say if this is a price drop from Orinoco or not. CDW just could've gotten a good price from Orinoco or just sells a crap load of them.

Your deal is OK, but you can do better :)
This package goes on sale about once a month for 200$ even.
I got mine for ~190 total after shipping and tax :) However the popularity of this setup is growing and it is getting hard to find in stock.

PS: I have this setup and it ROCKS. The gateway is nothing special and is a pain to administer because it can only be setup through the wireless interface (no built in switch). I use the gateway as a simple ethernet bridge and use a netgear gateway to provide NAT and connectivity for my
wired network. The range is outstanding. I can sit outside on my porch and I still have good signal strength and run at 11MB/s.

Funny how these are rated at 11mbps while the RJ-45 jack is only 10baseT.

Things that make you go hmmmmm.....

The reason for the falling price on the RG-1000 and RG-1100 is they have been discontinued, the new BG-2000 is the current/future model and though it was expected to arrive a couple months ago Agere has been delaying it. It is now expected to arrive in early FEB. This is a good unit though it is very top heavy and wants to fall over easy! And when it does the case cracks big! My Case actuallt busted into a couple pieces and I now just have the boards working, but on the other hand it still works and now as a horizotal unit it is no longer unstable! just as a side note wholesale cost on this unit as a kit with the silver card included is $125.00

dmk11 - Your link is just the Gateway....no card.......

Anyone know where to find a good price on just an 802.11 Access point? I picked up the Sony card at CUSA for 19.88....need AP to go with it.

The 802.11b specification is for 11mbps over the wireless connection, the RJ-45 jack is for the WAN/LAN connection. DSL and Cable are all 10baseT.

Anyone know where to get the ACCESS point version? I don't need a router

The unit has only one RJ-45 jack that can be used for either WAN or LAN; in other words, you can use it as an access point in an existing network if that's what you need. There's not really any point in trying to find an access point-only unit since they all cost the same or more.

Athena,

Exactly.. he's saying that how can you get 11mbps on the wireless if the uplink of the WAP is only 10mbps. bottle neck.

11mbps has some overhead, 10mbps has some overhead too.

Although this is probably not the correct forum to discuss this in, the 11mpbs data rate includes radio overhead, so even in the best case you'll never exceed 10mpbs throughput. There is no bottleneck.

[edit since dmk11 edited as well]

<< 11mbps has some overhead, 10mbps has some overhead too. >>

802.11b has much more overhead than 10mpbs ethernet. Again, there is no bottleneck!

It's no different from the switched routers that have multiple 100 mps ports for LAN traffice and a single 10mps WAN port. As Brian Mc notes though, the effective rate for wireless LAN traffic is 10mps anyway.

the router function in this can be turned off I have my router issuing out IP's and it can pass them through this puppy. this unit basically does the same as the AP-500 and the circuit board looks very similar but it has added functions that the AP-500 does not offer and it can be had cheaper than the AP-500!

Can you stick this thing onto a router that has dial-up? Since this model doesn't have it.
I don't see anyreason why you wouldn't be able to. Just wanted clarification before I order.

or you can always go to pricewatch and do a quick search for Orinoco RG-1100.
Lucent Technologies
Networking Wireless Access Point - ORiNOCO RG-1100 - Retail Box PRICE FOR PHONE ORDER, MENTION PRICE WATCH - RG-1100 Wireles Gateway / Access Point 802.11b $ 174 $9.99+ 1/12/2002 3:10:20 PM CT American CompuTech, Inc.

just call them, and say they're advertising on pricewatch for 174.....they'll give it to you for 174.

the only question is that they don't say if the pc card is included...but it does say retail box. so if the card is included in the other companies' retail boxed access point...then, it should be...rite?
and if not..there are a few others on pricewatch that have the same product...so you can check with them and still get a better price than cdw.

cdw is a big company...but their prices are usually higher than what you can find elsewhere....
oh, and always use pricewatch/pricegrabber...just to make sure a product isn't being 'hyped-up' as a deal, when it really isn't.
