Chemical for what exactly? If you get a good pressure washer it will strip off actual layers of your brick/driveway if you want it to.

A guy I work with does pressure washing on the side. He uses bleach for everything, including brick.

To remove the salts that build up on the outside of bricks, one product (I believe that's still fairly popular) is muriatic acid. Spray on, powerwash off. There are several other products made specifically for what you're referring to. Check at Home Depot or other store, but ask a knowledgeable salesperson (they're hard to find though)

The masons scrubbed our walls with muriatic acid after building the house. Then they rinsed it off with a hose.

You use water. Simple tap water.
For some powerwashing you can put a very small amount of bleach in a large amount of water (like a cup for every 10 gallons), but I don't think you want to do that with brick, unless you are trying to kill mold or mildew.
What every you do, do not try to powerwash with a high concentration of bleach or any other compound that is not specifically designed for use in a powerwasher, as it could be extremely dangerous. Powerwashing with a high concentration of bleach would probably kill you. Other chemicals could pollute the ground water, erode the brick, or generally do nasty stuff to your brick and your skin. Remember when powerwashing you are likely to get soaked with what ever you use, so if it is not safe on your skin, you don?t want to use it.

i'm talking about an external brick wall facing car traffic and there's soot buildup and the bricks are darkened by fossil fuels.
