I don't think I've ever seen it called appearance grade, I have seen what I'd call a pre-colored pressure treat? But otherwise all the ground contact pressure treated wood I've used didn't seem to have different grades.

There is no such thing as appearance grade PT, they might call it that, but it's all ugly as shit.

Is it brown? The newer stuff they sell actually looks half decent, maybe that's what they mean by appearance grade?

This is the PT I used from Home Depot, not even sure if they still sell the green stuff anymore.

There are grades.
#3
#2
#2 Prime(looks better, still might have knots). This is the "appearance grade" synonym.
#1 is the "best" and likely is something you will only find at local lumber yards and not Home Depot or chain stores.
#1 Prime, aka "Select"
And even better grades

Maybe a picture of the actual wood instead of the receipt would help...

But yeah, it's all ugly!

If only they made some sort of device where two parties separated by a distance, like a customer and a store, could communicate and share information. :p

Well, it's still more proven than "composites". Apparently...mold can grow on those materials and ruin the look.

mold and moss can grow on pressure treated lumber as well...it's treated to prevent rot, not moss/mold growth.

Pressure treated lumber used to be good stuff, since it was reformulated a couple decades back it sucks. Direct burial and you can expect failure at around the 15 year mark. Some will last longer, but no much. I have a couple hundred feet of retaining wall that has to be replaced after 16 years in service, makes me wish I'd used concrete.

PT was never really meant for direct burial. The stuff they use on rail road ties and hydro poles is a bit different, and much more toxic. If you absolutely need direct ground contact you either get ready with the idea of replacing it every 10-20 years, or use cedar.
