Great. Another doc in the making who just throws antibiotics at anything and everything.

Why the antibiotics if there's no infection?

That's exactly what I thought! Funny thing is... while I was in the checkup room the PA got on his computer and ran down a checklist very similar to WebMD to diagnose my problem... lol. Guess this is something they do now.

I can't really blame him though. I did about 4 hours of research and nothing really stood out from the changing symptoms that I've had.

He came to the conclusion it was Acute bacterial prostatitis. But no bacteria found in my urine? The antibiotic was prescribed just to reduce the inflammation and clear out anything that may cause the problem. Seems to be the common Rx doesn't it?

I'm just happy that my symptoms are about 90% gone now... I feel so much better. But hell, I did even before I went in yesterday. Just felt a little like I was walking w/ a golf ball in between my legs.

I had almost the exact same problems 5 months ago. Would go frequently but it would take some time to get going and very little would come up. Felt this pressure on my waist line/bladder area.

Doc prescribed an antibiotic and samples of Flomax. Skipped the Flomax.

I'd say today I'm 98% better. There are still some days I need to go a bit more than normal but nothing like the 13 trip pee marathon I once had.

Glad to hear you feel better as well. I'll probably only end up taking 1/2 of this Rx so that I can save it for a latter date if I ever run into the same thing again. Did you have tenderness in your prostate area? Is it still there? I'm hoping mine is completely gone within a couple days.

I keed. Anyway, the Doc was on vacation (just my luck) so a PA checked me out. Ran all the normal checkups, a urinalysis that came back clean. I had to let my sun shine so he could squeeze on it and do the ball-cough routine, but luckily no fingers in the butt. Nothing abnormal he said..). He basically prescribed me antibiotics (ciprofloxacin) for 10 days and said if the swelling of my groin doesn't go down and the tenderness doesn't fade to let him know. My followup visit of course would be with a urologist. Hopefully I won't have to go that far.

Woah. Cipro from the get go? I would think he would start with Doxycycline and such before he went to the heavy hitters.

I didn't know it was such a strong drug? Guess I should do more research. I don't feel anything when I take it to be honest... just drink a lot of water and eat w/ it.

This is a very bad idea. Take the medicine until it is gone, which I bet is exactly what they directed you to do when you got it filled.

Thank you Doctor. I shall not drink any alkeehol or milk products while taking my Rx either. I promise!

From the PDR: "Not completing the full dosage schedule may decrease the drug's effectiveness and increase the chances that the bacteria may become resistant to Cipro and similar antibiotics."

Have you been diagnosed with Prostatis?

-drink a lot of water
-stay away from spicy food
-if you need to get one of those rubber doughnuts to sit on for when it flares up.
-try to avoid sitting too long.
-certain foods can/will aggravate it, document issues until you learn what causes problems
-sex can be beneficial

This is probably something you will have to learn to live with the rest of your life....it is not something that can be "cured" simply manged. It does not make your susceptibility to prostate cancer any greater, but you should pay attention to your body and have regular checkups to monitor it. Lets face it...who doesn't like a gloved finger in the ass every 8 months or so?

No, all tenderness was up front. Every once in a blue moon I get that pressure feeling but nothing bad. My dad has the same thing, but, being 55 years old, that shouldn't come as near a shock as a 29 year old like myself having it.

Just take the whole prescription. If it is a bacterial infection, only taking the antibiotic until they feel better (like a lot of people do, unfortunately) does cause the surviving bacteria to become somewhat resistant to it; in addition, there's a reason that the antibiotic was prescribed for that length of time, it's long enough to make sure the bacteria actually get killed. If you stop taking it, you may not (scratch that, most likely won't) kill all the bacteria that are causing the infection.

I know it's an annoyance to take a drug daily, twice daily, whatever - but it's for your own good.

While prostatitis isnt unheard of, i've read that it doesnt commonly happen to normal healthy un-obstructed urinary tracts.
In fact, when a guy has recurrent UTI's or prostatitis, you should start worrying that something is obstructing the tract somewhere in the form of a tumor, stone, or giant prostate.
I'm not suggesting thats whats going on here, but the OP's story makes me think of that for some strange reason.
Fortunately, we live in a world with likeliest possibilities and this is probably nothing some empiric antibiotics can't handle.
The PA's actions werent unreasonable at all for initial visit, but further investigation might be warranted if this doesnt go away or if it recurs again in the near future.
Although even more likely than obstruction would be some kind of chronic infection that the partner might be carrying, but this is all stuff to look for IF symptoms recur.
