Press the volume controls, Windows XP Hangs?

I formatted the HD in my laptop about 2 weeks ago and went with a very vanilla install...only running a couple apps like SQL 2005, Visual Studio, and similar programs. I suspected that my newfound problem was related to IIS or SQL or VS debugger running in the background, but I finally have it isolated:

When I hit the mute, volume up or down buttons on the front panel, Windows hangs. CTRL+ALT+DEL pulls up the windows task manager, but no control...mouse moves, but no clicks, no keyboard entires work, nothing. I tried uninstall the touchpad drivers, but still doing it. I can do a fresh boot with nothing loading on start up, hit the volume button once or twice--Bam!

Any ideas? Also, is there a way to turn SQL and VS debugging off and to only load when needed? I removed just about everything in my msconfig, but it still is running. Turned off the service, but still in windows task manager.

Safe mode?
Try msconfig or services.msc to see if you can disable something that stops it.

Do I launch services.msc in the run box? I've never used it, but worth a shot.

I was proud of myself that I traced it down to the volume controls, which I have never seen before, but the happy feelings have worn thin since reinstalling the drivers is not fixing it. :)

I downloaded some codecs for Media Player 11, which I thought may be related...uninstalled them, uninstalled Media 11 and reinstalled...same boat.

I'll keep at it. I just got my 500GB MyBook, so worse comes to worse, I'll blow it out again, then ghost it for future use. :)

Lastly, how about the SQL/IIS question? Anyone know how to get these to not load unless needed? I was going to change all SQL references in services to "manual," rather than automatic, but don't want to screw anything up (then again, it can't get much worse).

Okay, even with no touchpad drivers (or sound card drivers), it will still lockup on command with a simple push of the volume button. I think Windows is using a generic, as the touch pad is still working. I checked all interupts and IRQs and resources: no conflicts. I may have to raise the white flag.
