Official Press Release
Done deal. ATI as we knew it, will no longer exist.
Its headquarters will likely now be in America with AMDs and profits will go back to the USA.
AMD needs all the help it can get in its struggle against Intel (which is even clearer now with C2Ds release), dont expect the less lucrative uber high end GPU market to continue to be ATIs sole concentration.
AMD will use/sell whatever ATI has developed on the high end so far, and then transition them to work for AMD's goals.. not ATIs former goals.
Thats the point to these buyouts.
As I told a forum member here, no executive sits around thinking "hmmm what company can we buy out to help them out.. oh yeah ATI! Lets help them defeat Nvidia!! This will please fanboy X!"
This buyout is purely for AMDs gain, and it weakens ATI as we knew it before.
NV will continue to profit off of ATIs new owner, AMD in the meanwhile. 😛
I wouldnt be surprised if Huang was all for this.
Whether people want to realize it or not, this is effectively the end of the line for ATI as we know it. AMD isnt going to devote resources to defeating Nvidia in the far less lucrative high end discrete GPU wars. They are having a helluva time with Intel alone.
They arent going to fight a war on two fronts. Intel alone is enough for anyone out there to take on (IBM.. AMD.. you name it).
Nvidia has won. And I'm sure they are/will be toasting the victory soon!
Its a good day to lean green.
