President Pivots on Taxing Benefits

President Obama, in a pivot from some of his harshest campaign rhetoric, told Democratic senators yesterday that he is willing to consider taxing employer-sponsored health benefits to help pay for a broad expansion of coverage.

Just some more of the typical Washington campaign rhetoric come to light. What better way to increase taxes on those making less than $250,000 than to increase what they have to claim as income. That way the douchebags who say "He said no income tax increases" can maintain their stilted stance and those of us with our eyes open can see the new size of the anal probe about to be inserted into the working/middle classes' collective arse.

So I'm curious about something. All of the defenders on UHC here say that if you look at everything I pay for, I already pay more for my current health care than if we had it through taxation and that I would actually end up paying less with UHC. Now, is that assumption based on current tax rates, or tax rates that will surely be needed if we do create a UHC system?

Stimulate the economy by making us pay more in taxes -- brilliant. It's just more of the same crap like Romney did in MA. You didn't raise our income tax, but everything else went up.

didn't he pounce on McCain for bringing this up? or was it Hillary?

'08 is a jumble for me, I think I was drunk for most of it.

Yes, Obama pounced on McCain for proposing this very idea.

I wonder where all the libs are hiding??

This is a $246 billion a year tax and it will be paid by just about every American from the poor to the rich.

...except that the working poor overall don't get employer-based healthcare worth anything.

Wow, so rather than look into why health care is so expensive, government just transfers the burden of the high cost to taxpayers. And not just the wealthy, but across the board, as the middle class Americans will get hurt the worst. Nice.

We'll know something rather soon. Obama wants a Healthcare bill passed before the August recess.

If the dems decide to tax healthcare benifits they will have losses in 2012. There moderates will go down in flames just like the GOP moderates did in 2006 and 2008. Its would basically amount to one of the largest taxes increases to the middle class.

People haven't caught on that when the price of bread/milk rises that there's a damn good reason behind it. It's too complicated for them to blame the President and Congress for it.

I'm sure there will be plenty of losses in 2010 if they push it through. I know the tax increase for me would be quite large.

FFS why do you assume everyone who is liberal and/or voted for Obama agrees with this?

Liberal.
Voted for Obama.
Disagree with this idea.

Are you happy, PJ?

Nothing will get people off employer based systems faster than taxing it.

Private-sector businesses spend about $518 billion a year on their workers' health insurance, benefits that are not taxed. If workers had to pay taxes on their health coverage, it would raise $246 billion in revenue each year, according to the congressional Joint Committee on Taxation.

wtf rate are they proposing this be taxed?!?!?!?!?!? That looks like nearly 50%.

Toss on Cap and Trade and the eventual inflation that comes with this kind of deficit spending and the middle class is about to be fucked 6 ways from Sunday.

Which is why this probably won't pass. The Dems seem intent on passing a healthcare bill this year, but they'll probably just finance it w/ deficit spending, since no one here in credit card nation really cares about that, and not pass some unpopular tax. The Dems like to dole out the benefits, but are reluctant to ask people to pay for them - just put it on Uncle Sam's tab!

Wow, so not only did he lie (and smear his opponent on a premise he is now going to adopt), but he's also going to raise taxes...but wait...not claim to be raising taxes since technically, your income tax rate isn't going up.

I am flabbergasted...really...I mean, Obama as a good, moderate Democrat would never do anything like this!

Clearly it is BUSH'S FAULT!!!!!!!!!!

As a guy that only makes 50k a year this would really hurt. On Tuesday I had to get a chipped tooth fix cost me 1280 out my pocket with insurance. It was old injury I had when I was 15 2 teeth busted and after 23 years they had to be capped. I would love to had this paid for fully but in reality that not going to happen. I pay part of my health coverage each paycheck and all Obama's plain would jack that up each pay. My employer is not going to cover extra tax they just going to pass it off to me. It will be take it or leave it thing for me. Fuck this shit when come to money/tax/economy this government is fucking clueless.

I kinda wonder why health care insurance isn't taxed, anyway - at least those that are less than 7.5% of your adjusted gross income.

Like anything to do with the tax code, issues regarding treatment of 'medical' expenses and insurance is a convoluted mess of deductions and tax credits that really does nothing for the poor slub who has to try and find insurance for himself and his family.

Look at the big picture.

If we had universal health care everyone would get the treatments they need before they become huge problems, lowering the burden to societies insured people (like yourself), so that in the future instead of 1280 out of pocket you'd pay something reasonable like 400 (and the government would pay that 400 for you because we'd have UHC, so you wouldn't pay a penny! It'd be free to get your basic tooth maintence. 🙂 ). That is because they wouldn't have to jack it up to cover those who can't pay at all.
