WASHINGTON (AP) -- Former Secretary of State James A. Baker III has taken steps to avoid any conflict of interest between his business dealings and his new role as President Bush's emissary on Iraq's debt, the White House said Friday.

Baker is a longtime Bush family friend and troubleshooter who has extensive business relationships around the world. His Texas law firm, Baker Botts LLP, counts Halliburton, Vice President Dick Cheney's former company with major contracts in Iraq, as one of its clients and has an office in Saudi Arabia.

He also is senior counselor to the Carlyle Group, a global investment company.

Before Baker's appointment as an unpaid volunteer, the White House counsel's office conducted a through review of his business ties, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said.

"He is complying with all applicable ethics laws and rules, including the filing of a financial disclosure form disclosing his assets and incomes and liabilities and outside positions," McClellan said. "He's gone to great lengths to avoid any potential conflicts of interest." etc.

Looks like US wants Russia, France and Germany to forgive Iraqi debt having not done so itself.

Do you read anything other than the headlines? This is from the link you posted, genius.

"Germany and the United States, like France, are ready not only for debt restructuring but also for substantial debt forgiveness toward Iraq (news - web sites)," German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's spokesman Bela Anda said in a statement.

The headline says "France, Germany to Help Relieve Iraq Debt " So obviously I read past the headline to post this.
Do you read anything other than the obligatory feel good remarks?
The German statement indicated that the United States also was prepared to relieve debt, and that levels would be decided by the Paris Club of creditor nations. However, statements from the White House earlier were noncommittal.
...
Asked earlier if the United States would set an example for its allies by forgiving the $4.5 billion in debt and interest Iraq owes it, McClellan replied, "That process is just beginning. We are looking at restructuring and reducing the debt."
So US has not DONE so itself, yet it wants others to forgive Iraqi debt.

So US has not DONE so itself, yet it wants others to forgive Iraqi debt.

Nobody's "DONE" so yet. The US HAS poured hundreds of billions into the reconstruction effort, however.

Unless you have a red herring to offer, I suggest you ignominously slump away from this thread now.

To ask anyone affiliated with the Bush to control debt is hilarious.

I hope the Euros don't forgive the debt until they are allowed to bid on some prime contracts. It's only fair.

You think it is fair that these Frenchies and Ruskies are not getting paid for the weapons that are now killing our boys.

Do you see Russians on the ground fixing water pumping stations, electrical grids, ect? Heck some of our soldiers are learning how to be engineers trying to help these Iraqis (60 minutes pretty liberal bias usually) restore services to bring them out of the stoneage.

So what, the US has supplied dictators across the globe with weapons used against innocents. Who really gives a sh1t about ancient history, right? Because the US sure as hell doesn't.

The Euros would be paid for restructuring Iraq; where the hell did you pull the weapons issue from?

Regarding the dead US soldiers, cry me a river. Every death is significant on a microscopic scale, but very insignificant on a macroscopic scale.

Yeah, you're in one of the most powerful positions in the world and you're going to spend your time there...making a little extra money for yourself and your friends?

The US hasn't poured hundreds of billions of dollars into the "reconstruction" effort yet. Most of that money has gone into the military.

Do you think the US does not count on a return on that investment? Is the US in Iraq out of altruism?
