Prescription pain meds not working

Morphine does nothing for me but get me kinda high. Hydrocodone does nothing for pain but makes me feel happy. Oxycodone does seem to help my pain, but I had to take more then my recomended dose fo it to really make my pain better, then I felt tired. Just gotta find what works for you I guess.

Sorry to hijack the thread but i was thinking about Mom and talking to other doctors socially. They told me Oxycontin was the greatest pain medication breakthrough in a long time, but it was ruined by abuse.

Try taking two of either said pills.

Also, this might be pushing it as far as meds go - by maybe try taking 2 Narco and 2 more 200mg ibuprofen pills. 800mg ibuprofen might just be a better way for pain management, that and with 15mg hydrocodone, you should feel quite a bit better.
Or instead of going to 15mg straight, try 1 and a half Narco, which would be about 11mg hydrocodone, and get you about 700mg ibuprofen if taking 2 more ibuprofen alone.
ibuprofen tends to be best for me when it comes to general soreness, whereas hydrocodone just makes me feel warm and takes my mind away from pain. Then again, I've never had it prescribed for any serious pains, just a nasty fever and got some Lortab Elixer (hydrocodone).
My dad is taking hydrocodone for some back problems, some issue with a swelled disk. So my genes seem to respond pretty well to the drug, thankfully. I couldn't imagine pain meds not working (OTC pain meds suck for me, I've used them so much in my life, shit doesn't work well. hell, 800mg ibuprofen doesn't work for me all that well because I use ibuprofen so much, especially recently with my back/neck seemingly out of alignment/just generally fucked up for some reason that I know not.

Try to get a different med? Maybe your body no likey, or likey too much, what you're getting.

Only pain med I've been on (pill wise) is Tylenoll-3 and it was mmm-licious. Couldn't even feel my bloated cheeks and 4 holes in my mouth.

When my cousin broke his collarbone, he reported that Vicodin didn't do much for him.

I think it's oxycodone (however you spell them, I'm sure the resident druggies know) that worked great for him...of course, it made him high as a kite, sooo...

Honestly - how much do you weigh? You may need a bigger dose. But percocet should at least do something to dull it. It won't go away but it should have some affect.

I'm 6 feet tall, about 190 pounds.

The Percocet is 5mg oxycodone/325mg APAP
The Norco was 7.5mg hydrocodone/200mg Ibuprofin
The Vicodin ES is 7.5 mg hydrocodone/750mg APAP

How many tablets and how often were you taking them?
It may surprise you, but I've seen some doctors/dentists write Percocet 5/325mg "take 1 tablet every 12 hours".
I simply  when I see them.

after i got surgery on my broken/twisted and rotated finger, i tried 1 vicodin pill, but it didn't do anything.
Beyond 1 advil pill on the day of the surgery, I didn't take any other pain killers

I'm taking 1 Percocet every 4 hours now.
The Norco I was taking 1 every 6 hours and the Vicodin ES one every 8 hours.

... all per the doctor's instructions.

pain killers seem to not work for everyone. For me they work fairly well. When I had surgery to remove an ingrown hair (VERY painful) the tylenol 3 they gave me worked fairly well. Usually took 4 a day. I actually still have some left, wonder if they're still good. Been like 2 years lol. Think I should throw them out?

The bottle should have an expiration date on it.

With the super low dosages of course it didn't do anything. Even ibuprofen should be taken in 800-1600 mg range to have any real effect.

Advil/ibuprofen is pretty much useless below 800 mg, you need to take at least 4 over the counter doses to have any real effect.

That's your problem and why it's not doing anything. Dosage is way off.

The neurologist I started seeing is this kind. I have bad discs in my back that are better for the most part now, but tend to flare up and let me know it's still there from time to time. I saw a pain specialist, and he had me use oxy instead of hydro. Great by me, it worked better. After I stopped seeing him (he wasn't 'in network' so he got quite expensive) my regular old family doctor prescribed me oxycontin, but she asked that I try and find a sepcialist as prescribing schedule II narcotics isn't her normal thing.

So, I searched around work, and found a neurologist that was close that I could see at lunch. She would prescribe me 60 5mg hydrocodone pills for a month supply and told me to take 2 a day, no more then that. I told her that I was currently taking 20mg of oxy (stronger) and that really wasn't enough on bad pain days. But, she was too concerned with abuse and addiction (I can't blame her I guess, I know there are a lot of people out there that make it hard for people who need them legit *cough*Zane*cough*).

Anyway, luckily for me my back is much better in general these days, but I still can't figure out how she though 10mg a day of hydrocodone would get me by when there were days I literally couldn't get out of bed from the pain.

That was a long time ago.
Actiq and Fentora destroys Oxycontin in that area.

Yes, Oxycontin is probably the most heavily abused opioid.

That's what I thought too... I'm not huge, but I'm not a small guy. I'll go over it with my doctor tomorrow and see if he'll agree that I should either have stronger pills or just take more.

Thanks everyone for your input.

I'm sure everyone is different, and I don't know what dose I was given. But, when I used to get cortizone shots the doctor would give me Actiq, for me the oxy just seemed to work better. My tests were hardly scientific. He had me try the Actiq, then would give me the shot. Other times I'd just gobble down an oxy before I went to get the shot. In my experiences the oxy helped a bit more with that pain... but again, hardly scientific and I don't know the dose he gave me. Actiq sure did make me feel relaxed though. 🙂

I do NOT work in the medical field. So take my posts with a strong grain of salt. Schedule 1 or 2 narcs are highly addictive (but really good at pain) and many docs don't want to prescribe anything but the lowest dosage. Just tell him it ain't working.

Yeah I know... I'll ask my doctor for a professional's opinion... I just wanted the opinion of people who have taken them as patients before. 🙂

I don't see how that is possible considering Actiq gets into the bloodstream much faster than Oxycontin/Oxycodone ever can.
Did your Dr. wait 24 hours after giving you Actiq to give you a shot? 😕

How long did he wait between when you took Oxycontin/Oxycodone and when he gave you the shot?

I would take the oxycodone before I left my house and drive to the hospital. It'd give it some time to get into my system. The Actiq they'd give me in the waiting area, it was a lolipop type thing.

It could be possible that maybe you just need some extended release medication like Oxycontin(better) or Morphine Sulfate CR(worse).

Yes, everyone who complains of pain to their doc gets given a Percocet.
That's generally the 1st C-II drug of choice for probably 90+% of docs out there and rightly so.

Maybe you're one of the few people that opioid just don't work for?

That means you're a mutant then.

unfortunately, folks respond very differently to pain meds and such.

Some people, vicodan knocks them on their asses for a few hours, while others get all hyped up like they've done a big line of crank.

I have a very high tolerance to pain, so by the time I hurt enough to take opoid pain meds, I'm "hurtin for certain," and it takes a pretty strong dosage to accomplish anything. (fortunately, I also have a very high tolerance for opiates...for some reason)

For those who don't know, percodan, percocet, and oxycontin are the same drug. Oxycodone. Oxycontin is essentially just a time-release version...which is why druggies like it so much. They crush it up and get ALL the goodness in one blast. Hillbilly heroin...

In case anyone's interested... I learned this morning that the pain meds were working. 🙂 The percocet seemed to wear off much quicker than the vicodin because I was in a lot of pain this afternoon after not taking anything and going out to the doctor. Now that I'm taking them again, it's tolerable. I spoke to the nurse briefly about it and she suggested we wait until next week when I start physical therapy and see how things feel after doing that and they can prescribe something stronger if necessary to help me cope with the PT.
