Does anone know when the new P4's will be available, with the 800MHz bus along with Motherboards with the Springdale Chipset?

Looking to build a new PC here . . .

might be around april/may... but I base this only on Rumors floating around.... I dont think Intel has set a release date or anything. BTW, the prices for the processor look to be at least $650-$700 on launch, so you might want figure that into your budget (if you have one :p)

I think you've got a couple of products confused...
  • P4 Northwood with 800FSB and HT (at lower than 3.06ghz) are rumored to be released in a couple of months.
  • Prescott is the .09µ successor to the P4 Northwood, but the designation (P4, P5, whatever...) hasn't been released yet, and it is due late this year.

According to xbitlabs...the new 800hz FSB cpus will be out in april.
motherboards supporting these chips (ie. 865PE, 875) should be out about the same time.
starting price for these new cpus...$178...with HT included.

XbitLabs

EDIT: fixed link.

Holy crap! If this is the case, then forget about GB and wait for Springdale.

I am holding out for the 865PE also as it seems like it will have some longevity as far as upgradability.

Springdale/Canterwood and the 800MHz FSB P4 chips will be due in may, not april
this is because of AMD's delay of the launch of the Athlon 64 from april to september

what is the difference between i875 and i865?

I know that the i875 = server or workstation but I see nothing that sets it above the i865PE for the price they will charge for the chipset.

i875=Canterwood, the successor to the i850, the performance chipset for the P4
i865=Springdale, the successor to the i845, the mainstream chipset for the P4

both have the same specs from what I've read. Obviously they will be different in some way, but dual DDR400 on both SATA150 etc

I wonder what it will be like with overclocking... doesn't seem very promising working with an already high FSB...

yup, i agree.
since the P4's are already mutiplier locked, i don't think we'll see impressive overclocks with the 200MHz FSB chips. the RAM is also another limiting factor, current DDR RAM can only hit around 500MHz(not on graphics cards, mind you)

the Intel move to 800 fsb is mostly Hammer protection. I dont see how Intel can release Prescott + springdale anytime soon. Maybe may somewhere near there. Its not even sampling.

From what I hear, Springdale and Canterwood in May along with 800 MHz FSB Northwood P4's with HT. The Prescott CPU's wont be out 'till the end of the year. I dont have much intrest in the 800 MHz NW CPUs. The Prescott is going to be the next big thing. I do think the Springdale and Canterwood boards are worth waiting for if you want to go DC DDR.

SpringDale, Northwood, Granite Bay, Canterwood...

Everything Intel makes sounds like a National Park...

All of Intel's codenames are named after natural landmarks. Most of them in the Northwest. :)

Tualatin = A river in Oregon
Coppermine = A river in Canada's NW Territories
Willamette = A river in Oregon
McKinley = A mountain in Washington
Banias = A natural spring in Israel (I believe the cpu was developed in Israel.)
Etc...

Klamath and Deschutes are also national forests.
The Springdale chipset (865PE) is due Late April, along with the Pentium 4 HT at 2,40 up to 3,20 GHz. The FSB is, of course, 800 MHz. Let's think again on Barton's 2,16 GHz 3000+ rating!

i can't wait to see the benchmarks
mmmm
wonder if amd's 200mhz fsb barton (possibly a 3200+ and a few below it) will be targeted at the same time frame
ohhh and kt400a
hehe

Springdale seems like it will be worth the wait.

It has Raid 0 on the southbridge!!!

K, so I have a question which I know may muster some *smirks*, but c'mon, help a newb out, will ya! :)

I was wondering, are the new motherboard chipsets, backwards compatible with the 400/533MHz FSB P4s?

Rephrased - if I'm in the market for a new motherboard anyways, decide to buy one which supports the new 800 FSB cpus for futureproofing, will I be able to use my P4-2.4b (533 MHz) CPU with it?

Thanks in advance!

Yes the new boards will be backwards compatible, they will support 400 533 and 800 fsb chips. :)
