ill be helping a friend get a new rig, no overclocking will be involved... will i go wrong choosing 2.8E 1MB Cache Prescott(aside from it being toooooo hot)? or should i stay with the 2.8C 512KB cache Northwood or even get the 3.2 ones....

thanks

Werty is not overclocking so I suggest you buy a Northwood chip,it's slighly faster & runs much cooler than a prescott.

If you're not overclocking, buy the fastest off the shelf chip you can get. A 3.4 northwood would be nice. or 3.2 Prescott.

Benchmarks show close performance between northwood and prescot until 3.5+ ghz where prescot gains a small lead. I just ordered a 2.8C cuz I'm not overclocking and don't really care for the extra heat of the prescot.

Theres a 3.4 and 3.6 prescott (LGA775)

at 2.8ghz the C is clearly the better option, the longer pipeline for the prescott outweighs the benefit of the larger cache, youre getting the same speed at the cost of a LOT more heat.

Choose 2.8C coz you not overclocking. Prescott only shows its power at 3.6 or above.

But if Prescott clock way too far, then may be THIS will happen. 😀

2.8C Northwood is fine.............
Not going to see the extra speed/price ratio to go with the Prescott or a faster Northwood for that matter.

Go for the tried and true Northwood.

If you are not overclocking, at least go for the 3.2 or 3.4 so that your cpu will not be a bottle neck once you upgrade to these high end graphics cards.....if you are into gaming.

I'd go with the northwood too. I got a 2.8e prescott just to see if it was really all that bad, and it is!! Overclocked to 3.2Ghz with pc3500ddr, it is still slower than my 3.06ghz 533fsb northwood with pc2100 ddr, and runs much hotter(62c under load at stock speed).

The prescott is hurting at that low speeds due its long pipeline, the 1 mb cache helps but not much. Definitely Northwood, I agree though go for the highest speed your money can buy since you're not ocing.

Got my 2.8 prescott to 3.41Ghz now, and it's not really running any warmer than it did at stock speed. Still a bit warmer than my 3.06ghz northwood, but it can take it. I would still recomend the northwood if you aren't overclocking though.
