I recently bought the P4 2.8E Ghz 800mhz FSB processor without realizing that the core was Prescott. What are the requirements for a motherboard to match this cpu? I've noticed some motherborads indicating "Prescott ready". Is this a must? Any recommendations? Thanks :)
Oh, and along with that, I was getting a Nvidia Geforce FX 5700 Ultra. Anyone care to comment on likes/dislikes of this card. thanks again :)

Send it/take it back. If they ask why you are doing it, tell them that you thought you were ordering/buying a 2.8C, and your motherboard doesn't support Prescott's. BTW, were you aware that a Prescott is WAY slower than a P4C, at the same clockspeeds? They are between 200 mhz and 400 mhz slower, depending on who you want to believe.

5900XT/SE is a lot faster and it should be cheaper.

EDIT: Or around the same price. :D

Why are prescotts even slower than their northwood cousins?
Is it because the motherboards with true prescott support (i don't mean prescott ready) aren't out yet?

Prescott has a longer pipeline than Northwood, that's why it's a bit slower on the low end, and about even at current highest available speeds.

Supposedly Prescott will be faster at higher clock speeds, but then Northwood won't be around any more anyway.

Prescott's SSE3 isn't very common yet either, and that may help it out some.

Prescott may also have 64bit extensions lurking inside it, too. Who knows? :D

The entire archecture of the chip has changed. AT did a full review, if you go to the cpu page, Intel's Pentium 4 E: Prescott Arrives with Luggage. Prescotts won't see their potential until they're clocked in the 4-5 GHz range.
