i'm planning on retiring my trusty 'ol 2.8C after a couple of years and was considering the 3.0e as a possible replacement. i o/c my cpu and have read that the prescotts scale better than the northwoods at speeds greater than 3.2 ghz. heat's not a consideration since i run liquid cooling. has anyone successfully o/c'd this thing and what kind of speeds are you getting? of course, mmmv 😉 . my system specs are as follows:

Asus P4C800E Deluxe w/1018 bios
2 x 512 mg sticks OCZ pc3700 Gold rev.3
eVGA 6800 Ultra
OCS Power Stream 520 p/s
Swiftech MCP - 650 pump
Black Ice Extreme radiator w/ Swiftech Radbox and Thermaltake adj. 120mm fan
Danger Den TDK cpu waterblock

I'm not real sure, but I have a 3.2E sl7kc that I have running at 4.1 Water cooled. It seems 1 will get a BIT more of an OC out of a prescott, versus the Northwood, but not really that much.
 
Go for it.... I get 4.0 on air with my 3.2es and 4.2 on air with my 3.6es LGA775. Both of these are running air cooling and the 3.2 never reaches 60c at full load and the 3.6 will run 62c full load. That "prescotts are too hot" crap is just something the "amdfanatics" have to grasp to make themselves feel better😉
 
I can boot into windows at @4.2 with my 3.0E SL7E4 (system details in my sig). Running right now stable at 3.8 at default vcore! With liquid im sure it can do atleast 4.1+ stable 😉 If you can, try to get a sl7pm (E0)stepping!
 
If you want a "heater" make sure that you get one with one of those "J" model numbers, i.e. 570J (I know thats 3.8GHz), so the one youd want would be the 530J. However, this would require you to throw out your current mobo, cuz I think the 530J's are LGA775 only. From what I've read, the earlier 478 prescotts weren't too great as far as overclocking goes, but that could depend on the specific chip you get. Or, get an AMD 😀

I suppose Tomshardware and anandtech and the other review sites are crap also since thats what they write ? And they are all "amdfanatics" ? And the fact they get so hot they throttle down is crap ? and the fact that intel cancelled the 4 ghz had nothing to do with the heat problems ?

Intel makes a good product. Just not as good at the moment as AMD, but your statement is flame-bait and crap !

The 3.0E should do 3.7~3.8 no problem on air cooling. Yeah if you are lucky you will get an E0, but the D0's are very good too. I would recommend getting a XP-90 for cooling. My temps at 3.9 are 36 idle 45 load. I don't consider that very hot. The orginal C0's ran hot but they are much better now. Hell my D0 runs cooler than my previous 3.0c.

Hmm... My athlon xp hits 35c full load on a hot day (at 250x10, where I leave it for daily use). That's just barely more than "half" as hot as any of your prescotts.

Yes, prescotts run too hot.
 
The only Prescott chip that anyone has shown to possibly have an overheating problem is the 570J 3.8 LGA775 chip. That was only one site, though.

I just happened to "stumble" on one of these chips. I settled on getting this because they didnt have an E0 stepping 3.2. Will be testing it out later tonight.

So I am currently at 4.0GHz (check sig) and have been Folding for for the last hour. I only needed to bump up the voltage to 1.375V and am only loaded at 47C (watercooled). Its only 2 degrees hotter at load than the 3.0C I had in this setup. Pretty good stuffs.

That temps seems high for water, I run about the same on air at 4ghz. Is that what you are setting your vcore in the BIOS? GJ, I can't wait to get my hands on a 3.2E E0.
 
Abit 875 boards are known to read higher temps relative to the Asus boards. Something about the way they interpret temp data from the CPU diode.
 
Well, Folding would only go 4 hours before quitting @4.0Ghz. 3.8Ghz is solid now for the last 6 hours. This E0 stepping is only marginally hotter than my old Northy but my PWM temp sure jumped substantially from 28 to 40C. I am quite disappionted as I thought this would be substantially more overclockable than my old Northy that I run at 3.95GHz. I'll be exchanging for an A64 bundle instead.
 
Your cpu rules!!! Its not your chip its the board...max3 has weaker powerplant then ex. max2 and can simply not handle high oc with power hungry prescotts... You can fix that with mods though but you risk of loosing the board then....
