Hydro upgrades at one of our substations, there's 3 total going in over the course of the year for a big upgrade. Pretty big beasts, about 500,000 lbs each. I think that's dry weight too, I assume the oil gets added once it's in place and they install all the cooling fins.

The return on investment for that kind of infrastructure in rural areas is generally a negative and subsidized by the taxes from metropolitan areas.

All I see here is a waste of money. It's a bad business decision to invest in places that are a net loss financially. I think the Canadian government needs to start running itself more like a business.

Sure....stop "subsidizing" the rural areas...what are you gonna eat? Where will you get your petroleum products? Where will you get the bulk of your electricity?

I had to hit "show ignored content" to view that hilarity quoted.

Hydro One sells electricity, it is in their best interest to upgrade the infrastructure to enable future growth due to demand. More EVs in the future will put more strain on the grid, thus give them more business. Mining for EV battery materials will also put more strain on the grid, which will give them more business. That 80 million dollar upgrade is going to pay off fairly quickly as long as mines and homeowners pay their bill.

The EV industry will also benefit from this as the mines in this area will be contributing to mining for battery minerals. Also most of the products used by everyone including those in big cities are most likely using minerals mined here. Ex: Copper.

If you follow the 500kv line from that TS it goes up north to two dams that are producing around 531MW combined. Some of that energy is also heading down south.

What are you gonna just stop selling products and make zero money?

Anyways, I just like to point this out because Squirrel always spouts total nonsense about urban vs rural areas and thinks the urban areas need the subsidies and the rural folks are the actual self-sufficient ones financially. Perhaps you haven't read these conversations, but he is his usual totally ignorant self and ignores any facts and data anyone presents to him otherwise.

a transformer like that is not serving local customers, it's increasing capacity of the grid as a whole.

Yeah and lot of that power is going to be used for industrial stuff that benefits everyone even outside the city.

This is where it's going:

This mega dam was built in the middle of nowhere. The greatest generation built this and the golden gate bridge. That lake is man made and over 100 miles long and 375ft deep. The picture does not put in perspective how big that dam is. It's a mile long.

There are several large dams all the way in Quebec's north too. LG-1, LG-2, LG-3 and LG-4. very isolated area. Combined capacity is about 15,244MW.

Originally lot of that power was destined to go to the states but not sure if it's still the case.

I applaud infrastructure that provides electricity to areas which are a net positive economically, so if this juice is going to a city, all good. Believe me, I have also been for supporting the areas who are a net dollar drain to us, such as the rural areas, for many many years. However, my position has changed over the last 5-6 years. I remember when Obama pushed for high speed internet to rural areas, I was all for it, with all our tax dollars - this is what being progressive means! When these people, like Squirrel, do nothing but spread misinformation and willfully remain ignorant and have now been voting for those wishing to take decency away from all of society, I have stopped supporting them.
