Preorder now and pay 40$ extra on ME2

I noticed something funny about the amazon pricing for Mass Effect 2. (all shipped/fulfilled by amazon itself)

PC download: 16$
PC disk: 20$
xbox360: 18$
PS3 Preorder: 60$

That is a huge price difference between the PS3 and the other platforms... Preorder now and pay 40$ extra!
how long after it ships do you think it will take it to drop down in price to ~20$ like the other platforms?

is this prediction based on a pattern of PS3 pricing being higher than xbox and PC pricing of the same game which I was not aware of?

You do realize that Mass Effect 2 was never released on PS3 and is going to be a brand new game when it comes out and all new games for console's are $60 at release?

The game is new on PS3 and old on XBOX/PC. Why is the price difference surprising? Do you think it cost the developers $0 to develop it for PS3 and the publishers $0 to market it? Do you think the latter re-used the same materials?

it is absolutely NOT a "brand new game", its the exact same game on a new system.
as for "materials"... the cost of a disk is nil (~10 cents a DVD, ~1 a bluray)... the development cost (paying programmers) is where game studies incur cost. And I am well aware that sale price is based on what people are willing to pay, not how much it cost to make.

the issue here is that the price HAS dropped on other platforms. Which is rather odd, I expected them to be selling it for 60$ for another year on those platforms, then go down in 10$ increments... not just shoot all the way down to 15$.
That rapid drop in price on other platforms (60 to 15) leads me to believe that it will similarly drop in price on the PS3. My question is how long it will take.

Okay, so maybe you understand the basics of economics, but not so much for software development.

Based on the fact that this will be a new game for the PS3 that comes with extra content that is not on the disk for either the PC or Xbox 360 versions.

This won't be the first time that a game was released later on the PS3 and was at a higher price.

Waaaah.

Don't like it? Then buy it on the 360 or PC. Oh wait... you didn't choose to do that, so pay full price for the PS3 version that is new to PS3 users.

I don't see the argument here. Sure, the game could be had cheaper, but you're either unwilling to buy on those platforms or don't have the hardware for it.

You obviously don't know play games too often do you? It's very rare to see a game sell for MSRP after 1 year of being released.

One exception I can think of is Call of Duty 4: MW. But even that game didn't stay full MSRP after a year. Yeah it sold still for $40-50 after a year, but not full MSRP.

Games decrease in price within months of release so what makes you think ME2 would still sell for full MSRP for ANOTHER year after being out for a year already?

Use some common sense bro.

Mass Effect was never released for the PS3 was it? I don't believe it was, so this makes it the first chance PS3 owners got to play a Mass Effect game on their consoles.

I hope they enjoy this game as much as I did. Admittedly, I was far more intrigued by the early gameplay demos showcasing a more turn based RPG style combat than the action oriented style in the final version, but the games were good nonetheless.

Also doesn't the PS3 version come with the DLC that was released for the PC? Or is that a different version?

Yep. It comes with all the DLC released so far.

That's a lot of DLC too. Priced individually the DLC is around $30, so $30 for the game is a pretty fair price for its age. So if you bought the xbox version from Amazon and then all the DLC you pay $50. $10 extra on the PS3 version which is still brand new on that console (so brand new for many PS3 only gamers).

Sounds like the exact price it should be. What's the issue again OP?

actually, I bought it on the PC for 60$ when it was released. Why does that preclude me from discussing what seems like very odd pricing?

While games go down in price over time, they normally don't drop that fast. 60$ to 15$ in 11 months. And that the PS3 is excluded from the drop seems odd.
One good thing people brought up is that the PS3 release will have all current DLC bundled with it. This makes more sense now, although I am still curious as to how long it will take to drop in price.

it is not odd at all which is what you aren't understanding. the PS3 is excluded from that list because it is not a PS3 game that has been out for a year or so.

what you are saying is kind of like expecting Golden Eye on Wii to be $10 or whatever you can find the N64 version at because it is over 10 years old.

it is going to be brand new on PS3 when it comes out, first ME game ever on sony product. the price of new games is $60 for about 99% of AAA titles that get released. this is not new news at all, i do not understand why it is so hard for you to understand.

and on top of that, it is like a GOTY edition with a ton of free DLC.

Again, seems like you don't play games too often or are just simply arguing for the sake of arguing.

You say "they normally don't drop that fast". I say, yes they do to an extent and it's been proven with numerous games over the years. From $60 -> $20 is common. (And if you want to argue that $20 isn't $15, then you are just nitpicking and not actually bringing any relevant discussions to the table). Of course as I said before, there are exceptions such as COD4. However, games do NORMALLY drop from $60 to $20 after a year.

And again, I must ask why you think ME2 should continue to be $60 for another year, even though the game has been out for one year. It's ludicrous to think that ME2 should stay $60 for a full 2 years after release.

Sure they do. Bayonetta, Darksiders, Alan Wake, 3D Dot Game Heroes, Split/Second, Blur, etc. There are plenty of examples in this year alone.

And that the PS3 is excluded from the drop seems odd.
Only to you apparently. Everybody else seems to understand that this is a new game for the PS3 with extra content. Again, not unprecedented in this generation.

If anything, the pace of price reductions on new software has massively accelerated this year. I don't know if this is a new pattern in the industry or simply the strategy adopted by retailers to drive sales in a weak spending environment.

I'm struggling to think of a game that doesn't lose 75% of it's value in a year...

Yea, I have to agree. I've never seen new releases drop that hard and fast.

All $60 games, over time, do lose their value, but never to ~$15. If anything, these games in the past would hover around $30, and eventually make their way to Greatest/Platinum Hits.

Multiple factors I think that includes:

  • glut of software
  • heavy competition from the likes of Steam discounting and Amazon too
  • bad economy
  • etc
