About 2 years ago, I bought a set of new tires for my mom's minivan, some BFGoodrich tires. I got the tires rotated twice, about 14k since we put them on, and there is only (before rotation) 5/32 and 6/32 left on the front and rear tires, respectively. WTF? The tires have an 80k treadwear warranty on them, and the tire shop said not to worry about it since they'll give me credit when the tread is finally all wore out. We keep the tires correctly inflated and rotated.

Never had this happen before. What are your experiences with premature wear on tires?

usually an alignment issue, or overly aggressive driving... hard stops, bombing into corners, hard acceleration, etc.

check the toe on alignment. If that's good and your mom doesn't drive like an andretti, I would chalk it up to a crappy tire that doesn't live up to manufacturer's claims. sounds like the tire shop is taking care of you, what more can you ask for?

The tire shop says the tires are wearing out evenly, and the car seems to drive fine. Could this still be the result of bad alignment?

Yes. Get the alignment checked at a reputable shop with a computerized rack.

Some vehicles also handle horrible at speeds. I have personally aligned a few focus' that have been perfect when they left and would come back a few months later with beat rear tires.

Also if the suspension is shot, that would affect the tire wear patterns.

You're lucky. My aunt once wore out a set of tires well before the warranty period, and tried to get them replaced. They looked up her address and told her that there were a lot of curves and hills around her house, so the tires couldn't be expected to last that long in her case. Warranty claim denied.

Um, what...?

Turns out the van has a rear solid axle, 0.51 degrees on the left and -0.14 degrees on the right. The front isn't bad at all, total toe 0.07 degrees and steer ahead was -0.07 degrees. I guess the tires are just bad... fingers crossed on the warranty when it comes time for that.
