:eek::':)'(

She is six weeks pregnant and when she went to the pharmacy to pick up an antibiotic her doctor had prescribed, the pharmacist gave her an abortion drug by mistake.

Mareena Silva might lose her unborn child because of the prescription drug error, which occurred last Thursday.

"I took it because I thought it was mine," Silva said.

Silva said the pharmacist at the Ft. Lupton Safeway gave her the prescription of methotrexate. Methotrexate is used in chemotherapy regimens to treat cancer, but it is also used to terminate early-stage pregnancies.

After she took it, Silva was nauseated.

"I came back and I looked at the bottle and it wasn't my name," she said.

The methotrexate was intended for a 59-year-old woman with the exact same last name as Silva's and a similar first name.

"My doctor immediately told me to try and make myself vomit to see if I could get the medicine to come back up," Silva said.

Silva was then rushed to Platte Valley Medical Center where they gave her charcoal to absorb the drug.

"For all this to happen now is really overwhelming," said Silva. "This is my first child, so it's really difficult to deal with."

Abortiowned?

(damn, see you guys in a month, I had to do it.) :(

Not bad, arguably worth the month.

As far as the OP, damn, that's just awful. :( I'm sure heads will roll for this one, but, and yes the pharmacist made an outright mistake, shouldn't one take a second and read the label on a bottle of medication before taking it? I know I sure as hell wouldn't be taking any meds from a bottle without double/triple checking what's written on it. Very unfortunate.

Poor girl! :(

Still, as a lesson to everyone, whenever you're taking prescription medications for any condition, you should always understand what you're taking and why so that you can spot mistakes like this before they result in potential tragedy. Always read the labels too.

Who the fuck just takes medication without reading the labels first, honestly? I'm taking odds she noticed the mix up, googled the medication and realized she could probably make a mint suing the pharmacy for the mix up. Any takers?

I would love to know what comes of this if she does (unfortunately, and tragically) have a miscarriage as a direct result. Wonder what the legal ramifications would be.

People love an easy meal ticket, but I'm not entirely sure medically aborting your first-to-be-born is on the list of easy get rich quick schemes. Sure, knowing how fucking insane people are, it's possible, but I think it's far more likely she was simply negligent in looking at the bottle.

I don't read labels.

I just took 4 different meds and I didn't look at the label once. Matter of fact....I don't think I've read an RX label in years.

Making a million dollars is harder than making another baby. Hell, making 10,000 grand is harder than making another baby. Honestly when all the pros and cons are weighed, I might have done the same exact thing if I could get away with it. Why not? Sucks, but giving up your potential babies life for a better life yourself and for any future kids you can have doesn't seem like that bad of a deal.

You'd have to have all the moons in alignment for that to happen. You'd need both:

1) A negligent pharmacist who just so happens to hand out the wrong prescription and
2) A woman who just so happens to want to off her first born

I'm more willing to bet the chick just didn't read the label versus her wanting to get rich quick.

The pay for "pharmacy technicians" is pretty low and most of them are about one step above fast food employees. Ask for some Sudafed and they switch into Robocop mode. Dispensing abortion pills...meh, these names are almost the same.

Oh, so you just go to the pharmacy and pop the pills they give you? Don't look at the bottle EVER? Not ONCE to read to see if you should take it with or without food? To see if you should take it and then drive? please EVERYONE looks at these things when they get them, if they don't they're an idiot.

To be honest, a woman would have to be a sociopath to do this. Women do not think about the lives of their babies in those terms. Sure, it COULD happen, but I think it's fairly unlikely.

I honestly must say, I don't often look closely at the label on the bottle. I just read the instructions they put in the bag.

Why would the woman up until finding out what the drug is have to want to have offed her first born? It could never have crossed her mind until she realized she could make a crap load of money off of it. Times are tough and like I said making another baby is a lot easier than coming up on 10 grand.
