Anyone know how to tell when she is ready to give birth?

She had one baby about a week ago, but is continuing to get bigger, and you can stil see the fry inside of her.

Googling got me this:

ANSWER: Hello!

It is different with all platies but generally speaking, the gravid spot goes through 4 color changes.

First, it will be a dark black/dark brown, then after about 3 weeks it will turn red/pink, then it will turn red/black right a few days before the babies are born, the after the babies are born it will turn into a very light pink color before the cycle starts all over again.

QUESTION: Hello again. How long until the red pink spot turns red black?

Answer
Like I said, that matters a lot on the individual fish, and there are no real set guidelines.

The general gestation period is about 1 month, and the fish is probably not pregnant for 3-10 days after it has it's babies.

Let me know if that helps, if not I'll try to clarify or find a more specific date.

Heh - when I first read your post, I thought 'platy' was short for 'platypus'.

And I'm thinking, "how the hell would anybody here (Dug777 possibly excepted) know when a platypus is going to give birth?"

I love platys. :)

I don't think you really can tell. They can hold onto the fry for a long time until the water conditions are right.

Be sure to have some place for the babies to hide.

Make sure you have some thick plants the babies can hide in, or a baby net inside the aquarium, or the others and the mom will eat the babies.

I have my tank well planted, unfortunately the baby that was born decided to swim to the top of the tank and was eaten by a molly. At the moment I have mommy fish in a breeder tank, hoping she will give birth again. Her grave spot is black (its spots actually) and she is a pale yellow. She hates the breeder tank though. I feel bad for having her in there.

I love mollies too! Those are the two I mix together when I have my tank functioning. I love livebearing tropical fish. :)
