pregnancy test question

here goes,
my wife took a test yesterday afternoon and the kit showed not pregnant. it was a ept like comparable but the cheapie kind.
then, after about 4 hrs, the same kit showed positive!
we were like wtf...
so on her friend's suggestion, she bought the most expensive EPT kit and tried it again this morning and voila...........it actually spelled the word 'pregnant'!
of course, we are both ecstatic beyond belief....
now, just about an hour ago, she again tried the last remaining cheapie kit and it still shows negative.

has this happened to anyone before?
any explanations?
she's late by about 4 days now.........and tomorrow morning as soon as we can, we're going to setup an appt. with her gynac.
it's just that its only 1pm EST and inspite of having two finals next week, I can barely keep my mind on anything...........i'm just so excited right now......
don't even know if we should tell our parents right now or not...

1. Don't say anything until the doctor does the good test (there are two, one where they test for the presence of the hormone, and one where they actually measure the level of it).
2. Possible congrats! :)

hrm, I know the good EPT tests are like 99% accurate, which means high sensitivity and specificity. How long has it been since her last menstral cycle?

The tests use an assay to detect beta-hCG. The cheapo tests might have a higher thresh hold of hCG than the EPT test. Dunno.

The cheapie tests are not generally as sensitive as the better ones, I'm guessing you guys are preggers! Congrats in advance:beer: (for you, not her)

A doctor told us you're far more likely to get a false negative than a false positive.

You're likely to get false negatives because of the threshold levels... false positives are very rare.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pregnancy_test

Most pregnancy tests work by measuring the levels of hCG or the pregnancy hormone in the urine. Unfortunately, different pregnancy tests have different sensitivity, but the sensitivity can usually be found on the manufacturer's website.

Also, one important thing to note is that hCG levels generally double every two days (per wiki and other sources) and false negatives generally occur because of an insensitive test or taking the test too early or a combination. She should take another test in about a week, then see a doctor for a blood test (far more accurate). Another thing, hCG levels can very from by the time of day and because of other variables. It may be her hormone levels are just at the level for the cheap test to barely pick up on it.

i see.
i haven't stopped smiling since this morning and i'm kinda postponing talking to my mom bcoz I do not know if i'm ready to tell them yet.........

its good to know the tests usually generate false negatives than false positives....

rest assured, tomorrow morning, even before the sun's up, i'm gonna call the Dr.

a friend tells us that some doc's will not even entertain the wife for a test unless she's 6-7 weeks pregnant.........i hope that's not true.
her doc may be extremely busy but she still should be allowed to come in and give the test...

Lola

CONGRATS TO BOTH OF YOU!!!!!!

I know that depending on what day she is post-ovulation, it can take a long time to show + or -...
But best wishes to you both! Have her make a dr. appt to confirm!

Your primary care doctor should be able to order a test if that's the case. They simply draw blood and send it to the lab.

Oh yes, and congrats.

Any ideas for names?

When my wife got pregnant the doctor wouldn't even see her for 6 weeks. He said they use the same home pregnancy tests in their office because they are cheap so if you had a positive home test it would be the same result in the MDs office. He wouldn't see her for six weeks because he basically said there is nothing for him to do but wait.

Congrats OP!!! My one year old daughter has been a tremendous blessing in my life.

My wife tested negative on all urine-based pregnancy tests that she took with our first two children--even the ones the doctor gave her. The doctor had to test her blood to be certain.

Also, four days late (depending on how accurately she keeps track of her cycle) may be too early to tell...

get doctor to 100% confirm. I really wouldn't mess with pregnancy tests a whole lot :(

Been trying for almost 6 years...

Finally, this month, she was late....

At a week late, she tested with a home kit... negative

At two weeks late, after a couple more home tests, she had blood drawn at the Dr.... negative

At two and a half weeks, she started. :(

Oh well.... at least we get to keep trying. :)

Congrats...and good luck. ;)

Schrodinger's Baby... :) She's neither pregnant, nor not pregnant, until the doctor gets the results of the test.
