Preferred windows development tools/apps/compilers

I am new to development in windows, have normally used linux in the past.
I'm curious as to what tools/apps/compilers the programmers / developers on these forums use or recommend.

Probably depends on what platform you plan on targetting. For .Net I'm sure most people use Visual Studio especially now that the express versions are free.

We're still using Visual C++ 6 / Visual Studio 6 at work since our code dates back to 1999 and there is no good reason to move our Windows client applications to .Net.
