Like any institution, the idea of the USA changing from a country with no territorial ambitions and
changing into a nation exhibiting those ambitions requires that this policy stand some sort of test of
time. So that it does not become some sort of flash in the pan institution like the shakers---who had no shortage of converts but forgot to recruit a newer generation of recruits. With GWB&co. having but two years to go, the question is where are those recruits?---and where are the successes that will cause recruits to flock to that banner?

But like any B grade monster movie---there are always those son of Godzilla type sequels with scripts already written, and the one way to guarantee they will never be produced is to have the previous version flop at the box office as nobody buys a ticket to see a stinker.

Which seems to be whats happening now less than four years unto this Iraqi occupation.

But another point needs to be made---if we pull out now or later without securing some sort of an effective government---and thereby become seen as the agency that caused Iraq to descend into a bloodbath of sectarian violence, we will have far more than a domestic hotbed of revilement to contend with.

Because the United States being the lone standing superpower leaves something almost unique in world history. Namely a time when there is absolutely no balance of power. And if the USA cannot be that harmless giant, the rest of the world may be forced to ALL ally against us to restore that balance of power.
