I thought I'd start this thread just for fun. Everyone reply with what you think the DJIA will close at on 12/31/09. You can provide a justification for your answer if you want.
US markets are closed on 1/1/09, so we can just consider all replies made before they reopen on 1/2/09 at 9:30 AM EST. Maybe someone can donate a prize to the winner
It ended 2008 at 8776. I'll make a prediction of 9500 on 12/31/09. I think all of the worst has either already occurred or already been priced in, so I don't think it will close any lower next year. On the other hand, most reports seem to suggest that the economy will remain sluggish throughout most of 2009, so I don't see any huge rally taking off next year either.
Again though, this is all just for fun. I'm not taking my guess seriously when it comes to real investing.
