I thought I'd start this thread just for fun. Everyone reply with what you think the DJIA will close at on 12/31/09. You can provide a justification for your answer if you want.

US markets are closed on 1/1/09, so we can just consider all replies made before they reopen on 1/2/09 at 9:30 AM EST. Maybe someone can donate a prize to the winner ;)

It ended 2008 at 8776. I'll make a prediction of 9500 on 12/31/09. I think all of the worst has either already occurred or already been priced in, so I don't think it will close any lower next year. On the other hand, most reports seem to suggest that the economy will remain sluggish throughout most of 2009, so I don't see any huge rally taking off next year either.

Again though, this is all just for fun. I'm not taking my guess seriously when it comes to real investing. ;)

I'm going to throw a caveat in........

If the SEC steps up and starts punishing bad behavior (hedge funds, blind shorts, uptick, etc.) then I can very well see the dow at 10k. (It won't hit 11k cuz if it does, there'll be another massive selloff for all the babyboomers)

If the SEC remains the worthless POS that it is and does nothing, hedge funds will prevail and while posting lesser returns than previous, they'll still get away with making their millionaires more than the average mutual and we'll see dow around 9,900!

Scenario #1 --------------> 10,700

Scenario #2 --------------> 9,900

Government will bailout the stock market and buy $10 trillion dollars in stock in every company.
