You guys are too young to really remember old school wrestling. And I mean when Jerry Lawler was young, he actually was the first wrestler to have a music video. Memphis was the ****** back then, that's why Andy Kaufman came here. Atlanta had some ****** going as well, the Von Erichs come to mind.

My favourite line was by an announcer way back in the 80s... it was a guy with an English accent that used to do the ringside commentary with Gorilla Monsoon... Bobby the Brain was up to his usual no-good tactics near the ring.

Jesus, you guys are so wet behind the ears!!!! I remember going to see Bruno Sammartino fighting his best "friend" Pedro Morales at Shea Stadium way back in the early '70s. It was billed as the ultimate "scientific"(what the hell that meant, I do not know) match. I think at the time it set a record for wrestling. Something like 30-40k people there.
A child of immigrants, Freddie grew up in a working-class neighborhood in south St. Louis. At seventeen, Freddie made his wrestling debut in a carnival. Unhappy with his choice of occupation, his family persuaded him to keep his "real" job, and for a while he worked as a meatcutter. But after serving in the Navy in World War II, Freddie returned to the world of wrestling, which was at the time still something of a carnival sideshow. Here he picked up his catch phrase: "pencil neck geek."

The New York Daily News used to publish the results of the fights from the night before in Madison Square Garden and I would eagerly greet my dad when he would come in with the paper in his hand. You were not allowed into MSG back in the 70's to watch wrestling if you were under 16. Crazy, huh?
My dad was a very close friend of a local promoter in Brooklyn,NY and I got to see Haystacks Calhoun and the Russian Bear Ivan Koloff up close and personal. This unfortunately ended when I gave my 6 year old brother a concussion in 1976 by doing the dreaded "piledriver" on our concrete basement floor. Good times.
Anyone remember Irish Patty Barrett? He always carried a sheleighlie(Sp?) around and would whack his opposition unmercifully.
Peace

Lord Alfred Hayes! Yea..he had that exaggerated english accent and used to be quite a fun bad guy (heel) announcer. He used to somehow make a lame Right Guard or Odor Eaters commercial humorous with his accent.
