Who cares really? Unless you can specifically tell me what feature has that XP or 2000 doesn't, don't sweat about it, it's not like you have to upgrade to vista.

Other than the fact that the guts of the OS had extensive work, and there is a lot more eye- candy, and the resources used have gone up?

That system will run Vista just fine. With that said, I'm postponing my upgrades (video card, hard disk, and backup/removable storage) until the release of Vista, when more details are known about what works well, and when new hardware has been released.

A few things?

That Athenatech case sure is ugly. More importantly is the PSU reliable?, I tend to assume that bundled PSUs with cases are not... well because usually they aren't. Can you swing something like this Zalman, or Lian Li ? They are obviously more expensive but you do get what you pay for, and I don't believe in cheap cases.

For the PSU the 330 Seasonic S12 would be a great choice.

You seem set on Intel Core so.... motherboard: AOpen i975Xa-YDG or AOpen i945GTm-VHL.

can't help you much, but i'll say that i plan on building a replacement rig for my aging 2.4@3.2/1gig/6800gt@u+ sometime after conroe comes out and dx10 cards are available.

whether i load vista or not i really don't care. but i DO know that i will be resetting the theme to the Windows Classic like i always do in XP 🙂 i can't stand all that mac wannabe crap, only slows down the system.

As far as the case, I am looking for a smaller case that doesn't force me into half-height cards. If you know of a better looking one that wouldn't look COMPLETELY out of place in a HTPC, I am all ears. As far as the MB, ASUS N4L-VM DH vs. AOpen i945GTm-VHL, who wins? Note that the ASUS takes regular DDR2 vs a SODIMM, and has optical outs and "3.0G SATA" vice "1.5G SATA" (Like that last part really matters)

And Vista is allegedly out for consumers in Jan '07, but then again the CPP was supposed to be already out by now...
