Pre-Employment Drug Test

I took a drug test on the 24th of last month and my employer is still waiting for the results. I have had a friend who also applied at the same company. He took his drug test 4 days after mine and got his results back the next day. I don't drink, smoke, and have never done drugs in my life. I called the lab that is doing the testing to ask what the hold up was. I was told that it was still in testing and that they might be testing it for other things besides what they usually test for. I'm just a little aggravated because I don't want to loose this job. My employer has called me three times asking if I have taken the drug test because they have no record of it yet. Anybody else taken a drug test and it take awhile to get your results back?

Generally. they run the sample against reagents first. If it comes back negative, they deem it as such. If the sample comes back positive, they run it through a gas spectrometer, which is never wrong. Sounds like your sample is in the second phase of testing...

With regard to "testing it for other things". What other things? The only thing they else they could possibly want to test for would be L.S.D., which would have required the sample be wrapped in aluminum foil at time of collection.

You don't test for LSD through urinalysis. They are looking for opiates, cannabinoids, cocaine, methamphetamines, amphetamines, and barbituates. If you haven't done any drugs, then you don't have anything to worry about.

I have no idea really that is just what the lady told me over the phone when I gave her my specimen ID and she looked it up.

A standard test also includes alcohol, PCP, and benzodiazepines.

In fact you can test for LSD with with urinalysis. I'm looking at a requisition form right now with the option to test for it. If I remember correctly, they don't even use a reagent, they just unwrap it from fail and hit it with a UV light and charge and extra $10.00, then use the gas spectrometer to confirm if it looks like it has small glowing flakes in it 😛

A week is no big deal. Chances are they are just running a confirmation. Some labs even ship the sample off for confirmation.

Yes he tested at the same lab the one our employer told us to use.
 
Just called the lab again. The Doctor told me they couldn't test the specimen. He didn't really know why. He asked me what kind of perscription drugs I was on and that was it. So now I have to wait for them to send the results to my employer and go from there I guess.
 
Would being on a anitbiotic make it so they couldn't test it? I am on one I have to take twice a day. If I retest wouldn't while on it wouldn't I get the same results?

I'm getting taken to a Brewer game tonight with free beer. Can't pass that up. 🙂

..the gas spectrometer is considered forensic in it's analysis. It's the last word. I've waited as long as 2 weeks for a gas spec.results. Never understood why it takes so long..possibly something to do with the chain of custody of the sample and required certified witness/lab tech's to be present when the gas spec.test is done. Would be interesting for somebody to chime in on this and also explain why the employee is'nt entitled to a copy of the lab sheet that's forwarded to the employer. But the employee has to sign a medical release for the employer to get the lab results..just out of courtesy the employee should get a copy of the lab sheet.
