My girlfriend uses a P3 450 with 96MB of RAM. I thought I'd build a system for her and this is what I got. I'm pretty good with computers but I just wanted everyone's opinions because I'm not too sure on lower-end systems.

ANTEC Solution Series Super Mid Tower Case with 350W Power Supply, Model "SLK3700AMB" -RETAIL
SONY Beige 52x32x52 IDE Internal CD-RW Drive, Model CRX230ED, OEM
Western Digital 40GB 7200RPM IDE Hard Drive, Model WD400JB, OEM Drive only
Buffalo Technology 184-Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200 - OEM
Shuttle "AN35N-Ultra" nForce2 Ultra 400 Chipset Motherboard for AMD Socket A CPU -RETAIL
AMD Athlon XP 2500+ "Barton", 333 FSB, 512K Cache Processor - Retail
eVGA nVIDIA GeForce4 MX440-8X Video Card, 64MB DDR, 32-bit, TV-Out, 8X AGP, Model "064-A8-NV65-LX" -RETAIL

It comes out to $419.xx.

Does it seem good to you guys? (The Buffalo ram is fine, I'm a big fan of their Ram actually)

It for the most part looks good to me. However there are 2 things that I wonder about.
1) No DVD-Rom drive. Software is starting to come out in dvd format. $13 more shipped would get you a toshiba cdrw/dvd-rom drive.
That or give her your combo drive and pick up NEC dvd+/-rw drive for $61 shipped for your system.

2) An mx440 isn't all that powerful a gaming card. If she's not a gamer this should be fine... if she is a gamer then this card won't do too well with newer games.

Edit: 3) For $9.50 more shipped you can double her hard drive capacity, triple her warranty, and quadruple her buffer to 8mb. Don't pass this up.
Western Digital Special Edition 80GB 7200RPM IDE Hard Drive, Model WD800JB, OEM Drive only - $59

The only game she wants to play is Need for Speed Underground (don't ask -_-) and Sims2.. I'm assuming a Geforce4 would be enough for decent gameplay. Hopefully I'm not wrong?

Setup looks fine. As long as she dosen't care about high res or efffects, the gf card should be ok.

the grafx card is fine to play those games, heck it'd even be able to play D3.

Also with the hard drive you could always give her yours and pick up a 160gb for yourself.
The next step up videocardwise is a Geforce FX5200. The cheapest one of those is a refurb one for $45 shipped.Video card benchmarks.

A Radeon 9200 128Mb is only $50 or so.

An A7n8x-X would be a good motherboard alternative.

Also there's no need for PC3200. I would suggest Crucial PC2700.

And take the hard drive recommendation from Freejack. 8mb makes a nice difference.

The western drive is 8MB I made sure of that. =)

2700! nice suggestion, I'll look into it.

Radeon 9200? Hrm I've heard 8500's are better.
