1) What operating system will it be running on?
2) Public or private Personal Proxy?
3) How much storage space do you have at your host?

I've been running my own pProxy since October 13, 2000 and pPstats for almost as long, with Jay's help. So far it's taking up 187MB of space on my hard drive. It makes two log files for every day it's up and running. If it's a personal proxy it won't take up much space, but if you let everyone use you to fetch/flush work, your log files are going to be a little/lot bigger.

Just giving you a little heads up before you dive in. :)

Space is not too much of a concern. bphantom created a log compressor, and logs are reduced 10 times or more. The logs that do take up space are the log files. Those you can disable if you like as ppstats doesn't use the console log files.

It's nice to use to track machies quickly and easily. Lots of members here use ppstats, so you won't have to worry about trying to get someone to help you.

Ok went and made me some money today, now back to my hobby:D

BG, I am running win 98SE at present, Is that Ok?
I am just running a personal proxy with a few friends updating.

I have about 50 megs of 100 left for storage and of course I could always use that free storage I have with @ home too.

I know how to get a webpage up and running but no idea how you get one to update such as a stats page :frown:

I guess if it is a lot of work I won't bother since it was just a thought if these folks ever actually submit some blocks:Q

Jator, what would i need to try it on for size?

You will need a web server if you are planning on the stats updating periodically. Putting the stats on a 'web space' on another server means you have to do a lot of transfering of files.

If you run them locally, you need a web server, need to have perl installed on your Win98 machine and get a copy of GNUPlot. You can find it at my ftp site, Here . The ppstats comes with a pretty good readme. I suggest reading it first, gives you a basic understaninding of the stats. The we can move forward with everything else.

cpars,

Thanks for the thanks (didn't sound quite right did it?!?). I'm just passing along a service TA members have passed on to me in the past. We're here not only because we are addicted to stats (ok, so we really aren't, but I won't tell), we're here to help our fellow teammates. ;)

Spent a few hours trying to get a Pproxy running under Debian using Roxen as the web server. So far so good. Have to tweak it a bit. Having problems with some of the .gif files but it probably is something I have wrong. Just have to make sure all the paths are correct. I want to use this so I can watch each machine to make sure they are reporting back. This way if I see one that hasn't updated itself, I know it needs some attention. Post any questions here and I am sure someone here as gone through it and can help!

I have ppstats up and running on my alpha linux with Apache, which pulls the logs from 2K advanced server and its pproxy (via smbmount).

Great learning experience setting it up and actually seeing it work (plus getting the cron jobs together to do the periodic stats updates).

Most certainly post here if you need any help! Cpars - as something you might want to try - 9x usually comes with Personal Web server, which you could try installing/enabling to display the pages. Also, you could schedule a task with 98's Task Scheduler, to run the perl script every so many hours or minutes (more likely minutes, for the stats addicted... ;)).

Hello Jay,

Yea how do I get a person listed as the name of their choice attached to their IP or domain on the stats page. And then how do you combine or attach different accounts to that listing as Russ has done for a bunch of us, and I am sure you have done for many also. If i just had a config file to look at I believe I may be able to handle it after that :D;)

There are three text files in your ppstats folder.

One is rc5-ip.cons the other is rc5-domain.cons, the last is rc5-dns.cache

You should only have to work with rc5-dns.cache Open with a text editor. You'll see entries like this:

192.168.128.4, 192.168.128.4,2001/03/02

If the machine were named "Bob" you'd edit it to look like this:

192.168.128.4,Bob,2001/03/02

If you have multiple IP addresses, you need to use ip.cons
If you have multiple domains, you need to use domain.cons.

Go here

I messed around with the retire perl script and did this. To truley get something worth while, we need to setup databases though, then you can really do some neet stuff. ;)

Thanks for the reply dan And jay, I was able to get the listing like I wanted but these guys (several of them) have a dial-up accounts and are forever changing ip's, how will that work? I have not had anyone update from these accounts since I changed.

I do have some sledge hammers in stock if I need to get them out;)

Pinball I am trying your suggestion out thanks

Apparently these machines just don't understand Hillbilly :D:D:D:D
