PPPoE vs. PPP, compression

Now, what I want to know is, why doesn't PPPoE support link-based compression, like PPP does? I thoght that PPPoE was kind of a related extension to PPP. The reason being, that if I'm doing something like accessing newsgroups, which are on my ISP's local network, then I could get easily triple the throughput if I could convince the DSL server or line-card or whatever to negotiate a compressed PPPoE link. Any ideas? (I used to be able to max out my DTE speed on an external serial modem when using newsgroups on dial-up, for example.)
