PPPoE hardware or software

I found an article on the web teaching people how to setup hardware PPPoE using the ADSL modem. Just so happen I have exact same ADSL modem. I did it and it works.

I was using RASPPPoE before I found out how to do the hardware PPPoE. RASPPPoE works fine for me. Now I have hardware PPPoE, I have to wonder, which one is better?

Is there any thread or article discussing this topic?

So far the only difference I found is using RASPPPoE, my desktop and laptop have to dial-up then get connection. But they got different IP addresses. But hardware PPPoE makes the ADSL modem as an IP sharing device. My desktop and laptop are using the same IP address.

Is there any other resources I could found on the web?

Having an outboard device such as a SOHO router or a ADSL modem with some intelligence deal with the PPPoE is probably better. PPPoE is a bad protocol - it's very clear the problems the protocol and implementations of it cause end users, and it's not clear to me what problems it solves for ISPs (I know what problems they thought they were solving with PPPoE, but it mostly hasn't worked out that way). The less your other equipment has to know about or deal with PPPoE, the happier you'll be.

Hardware PPPoE is a direct translation from my native language - Chinese. The ADSL model does the dailing for me instead of RASPPPoE or WinXP built-in broadband dial-up service.

So far I have no problem with the hardware PPPoE. Kind of like a few years ago I was using cable modem. Instant connection right after booting.

RASPPPOE is a great piece of software but no advantage over Hardware PPPOE

Hardware PPPOE usually can keep your connection always alive. It is more stable, and usually yields 5% -10% faster connections.

The only difference is where the PPPOE software is running, instead of running it on your PC you've moved it to the router, both are still software.
