POWMAX

My case came with a 400 watt POWMAX PSU and i'm wondering how good it is/isn't.

I will be using it to power a 3.2ghz P4, 1 cd/dvd combo, 1 hd, 1gb of ram and a 6600gt vid card.

I've read that you should not use cheap PSUs. Curiously,is the worst that could happen to my stuff? What sort of risk am i taking by using that $25 PSU instead of the ANTECs or such?

POWMAX PSU

+3.3@28A, +5@30A, +12@25A, -5@0.3A, -12@0.8A, +5vsb@2A

So two questions:
+ How are POWMAX PSUs
+ What sort of malidies can a n00b expect to happen if they choose a "cheap" PSU? (will it fry the whole system, PSU burst into flames, random shut downs etc...)

-Pretty much the worst you can get.
-all of the above.

Quick run for your lives!!

It shouldn't burst into flames, or fry the system, but there is the possibility of that happening at a much higher percentage than with a name brand PSU like OCZ. The first thing that annoys most individuals is the instability in the voltage on the 12v...it won't be consistent...not something you can count on in the slightest! But a lot of people use them, just most peopel wouldn't recommend it!

I'd encourage you to buy a new PSU ASAP. I've seen plenty cases of PowMax PSUs frying hardware.

You have a nice system. Why skimp on the most important part?

LOL... thanks... i'm going to cash in some of those Best Buy gift cards and get something like this ANTEC 430 watt TruePower

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/ol...01073&type=product

I'd assume that is a pretty major upgrade? 😉

A powmax to just about anything else (quality name brand) is a major upgrade. It's akin to asking if getting a BMW is an upgrade from a Yugo (for those that are old enough to remember those)...

I found a POWMAX psu in a box of Trix one time. Does that answer your question?

Haha! Nice one! Were there any berries stuck in the fan? 😛

The berries WERE the fan...
