"We?ve been following the progress of PowerVR?5 Series 5 graphics technology for some time, often wondering if it will actually reach the market and if so how ? given PowerVR?s reluctance to do anything along the fab-less semiconductor business model, instead stick purely to an IP model. With no semiconductor licensee?s it appeared that Series 5 would stall, however last time we saw news of Series 5 it was. We presume, for an announced deal with SEGA?s arcade division.

More recently Imagination Technologies, the parent company of PowerVR, has put out a new financial statement and within that a few references have been made to the progress of state of Series 5. Here are a few elements of the statement that may be pertienent:
? We are close to delivering our very high-end next generation graphics technology that targets arcade, PC and console. We have already licensed this technology to SEGA for use in arcade systems and intend to explore relevant partnerships for other markets.?

?Developments with Renesas/Sammy, and the latest SEGA partnership are expected to lead to volume shipments in the amusement machine market starting from the second half of this year and early next year respectively.?

?5 partner devices in or close to production (compared with only one in production at the beginning of FY03/04) and 2 in prototype silicon;?
So, it would seem that in the second half of the year, which begins fairly soon, PowerVR will be ready to show of Series 5 in an arcade guise at least, however given their business model this still leaves some questions as to how, if at all, this will be brought to the PC market without any semiconductor licensees ? if PowerVR are reluctant to go to a fables semiconductor it may be a tall order to ask a board vendor to become one by effectively paying for the production themselves and giving royalties back to PowerVR. Hopefully, though, this will still prove to be an interesting solution and something can be worked out."

Series5 is alive?

Question is will it ever make it to the PC though? I know they mention it, but some of the info i've read (might have been the same article) indicated that there were a few hoops to pass thru to get there.
Could be interesting to see. Kyro2 made quite a stir for awhile.

This year is going to be interesting for video card releases. You have nvidia with their nv40 (sm3.0), ati with their r420 (sm2.0), s3 deltachrome (sm2.0), xgi volari (sm2.0) and hopefully powervr with their series5 (sm3.0).

s3 deltachrome (sm2.0), xgi volari (sm2.0)
You might as well not even mention these because they don't even compete with the r420 or nv40.

Isnt powerVR series 5 technology going into the new Intel Extreme Graphics core on their next generation mobos?

Maybe thats what they are implying by bringing it to the PC.

The only news I have heard about powervr and intel is that the new Intel 2700G chip is a PowerVR MBX but that's obviously not desktop.

Imagination's PowerVR cores are being used in Intel's multimedia accelerator Imagination Technologies Group PLC said the Intel 2700G multimedia accelerator, an advanced graphics and video processor for mobile and embedded devices, utilises the company's PowerVR cores. The Intel 2700G multimedia accelerator chip, optimized for the Intel PXA27x processor family, delivers a rich multimedia entertainment experience while helping to extend device battery life, the company said. The Intel 2700G multimedia accelerator incorporates a PowerVR MBX graphics core and PowerVR video acceleration and display processing cores from Imagination Technologies. Under the terms of its licensing arrangements Imagination Technologies receives royalty revenues on devices incorporating Imagination Technologies' IP shipped by partners.

I just heard some interesting news that Imagination Technologies are going to issue a press release in approx 2 weeks time regarding PowerVR Series 5. It's not clear if that means Series 5 has been cancelled but *we hope* it means PowerVR are ready to enter the PC market once again!

This is excellent news- the two choice situation is nowhere near as much fun as it was in beginning of the 3d gaming card era.

Vive la PowerVR5.

Nobody seems to know what has happened to PowerVR Series5, PowerVR will not even talk about it so I guess it's gone the same way as the Kyro3! :(

Oh well it's a good thing I didn't wait and got a msi geforce 6800 gt instead which I am VERY happy with! :)

That Rendition Verite was a great chip. Beautiful image quality for its time.

Yes, it was. It had the best 3D IQ at the time. I remember "upgrading" my Rendition 2100 based card to a Voodoo 2. The Voodoo was A LOT faster, but what a huge drop in IQ!

It seems PowerVR is waiting the right time for the launch of its new gpu, just like it has been done with series 3 (Kyro/kyro II chips).
Let remember that Pc desktop market is not the primary source of profit for the PowerVR team...I am confident that something will came out within the next 3/4 months...so I am speaking about the first 2005 quarter...but maybe my suppositions could be wrong ;)
Personally I am not going to choose any of the 6xxx nvidia processors...do you remember for how much time the PowerVR series 3 was good enough to play a lot of games in the last two years? And do you remember for how short time the Ti 4xxx nvidia series could handle game titles?
Patience is a virtue ;)

Well, you're obviously talking out of your ass if you think the 4Ti series had - I'm sorry, HAS - a short lifespan. :p

Kyro cards were overrated. They were incredible mid range cards but there's no way their life span was any better than a top end card. And it wasn't exactly exciting to have so-so performance no matter what you were playing.

Although I am still a huge PowerVR fan I have to disagree with you about the Gf4 Ti, I still have my MSI Ti4200 and it STILL performs very well even with demanding games like Doom3. I upgraded from my old Videologic Kyro2 years ago because it COULDN'T play new games at a playable level. The last driver release was the 2.01.21.0007 drivers released in Nov 2003, I tested them out fully with the latest software and the results can be seen here:-
