Too big for me that's why I got an S40. I like the movable LCD though.

I used to have an S100. I really miss the small form factor. I think my next camera will be something tiny.

You'll have to pry my G2 from my cold, dead fingers :)

It's a great camera. I don't know if I could ask for a better battery life. I used up two entire 128 meg cards, plus took a couple short movies, and all the previewing and downloading of the images and didn't run the battery dry. Absolutely amazing.

The images are superb. 8x10 prints look stunning. I regularly use the adjustments - white balance, flash, exposure length, night mode, portrait, macro, ect.

My only real complaint is that it's pretty slow to actually take the picture. It does not work well for fast snapshots like at a sporting event. Just too slow :(

On the slow note, I was at CC this weekend and checked out the S50 and the shutter was really fast. Much faster than my S40.

I have the Minolta. The battery issue is not quite as bad as some say. The 28mm lens on the short end is what I was looking for. This camera has it all!!

I picked up one of these for $400 new in the box about 2 weeks ago (Gateway store closing discount + employee discount.) Havent taken very many pictures with it yet but the ones i have taken come out nice. It will get a lot of use next month at E3 with me.

Thats a nice landscape.

I have an A40, and am generally satisfied, but would like something more like a 35mm in terms of quality and interchangable lenses. I know there is a new generation of CCD's coming out. Maybe in 2 years or so we will have 12 megapixel cameras with exposure latitude like that of film

The best Canon digital SLR uses as an 11mpx CMOS sensor. Just like computers, digital camera technology will begin to double in quality every year or so. I would prefer to have a 4-6mpx CMOS sensor in a prosumer camera instead of a 12mpx CCD sensor. CMOS sensors have less noise and use less power.

Durn blast it! I am trying to remember what I read about a new sensor. Arrrrggghhh..

Something about how it separates out colors for a sharper image. Was a big deal at the photo conventions. WTF was that?

Heh, I grabbed your BW version of the Country_house picture (from another thread) and made it the background on my Lappy. Very nice picture.

Thanks GTaudiophile and Tiles2Tech for taking the time to post your pics! (Tiles2Tech - at first glance of your post/just eyeing the links, I was wondering why I didn't know there was a "Large" and a "Small" Washington Monument.) ;) Doh!.

st00pid n00b ;)...if you want a 'prosumer' camera I would recommend a Canon A70. It lets you add custom lenses, has an underwater kit available, and is probably the only sub-$300 camera with FULL MANUAL controls--manual focus, manual shutter, manual aperture. Plus it has all the 'auto' modes you can shake a stick at. I would go check Hot Deals for the deal on this camera today (4/10/2003) and BUY IT!!!

Once you've learned how to use it (listening RossMAN?) you can sell it and move up. I'd also say a used G2 with some good accessories/lenses is all you'd need then...

But hey if you've got money to burn...do your thang! :)

I played around with the A70 at Best Buy. It is supposed to be an upgrade to the A40. Upgrade? It is like a totally different feel alltogather. And I mean that in a good way. It looks good, not too small, not too big. Feels so good using it. I think OD and OM have it for $249 without coupons.

Canon G2 is down to $485 at BB and everywhere else on clearence.

Though you're right about a 'good' sub-$300 camera - My original post quite clearly put my interest in the $700.00 range and detailed our intended use. But, money aside, the "Prosumer" items I'm interested aren't covered by the excellent sub-$300.00 camera you mention.

A70 Does not have or accomodate compared to the Powershot G3. And yes, it's worth the $$$ for me to have these capabilities.

1. Hot Shoe (for Speed Flash)
2. Resolution & 8 x 10 photo quality compared.
3. 35mm (1x) less optical Zoom than the G3
4. Less FPS than the G3
5. No Remote Option
6. Limited Storage Media options compared.
7. Limited Image format compression compared.
8. Smaller flip out LCD compared.
9. Limited accessories/lenses available compared.
10. There are quite a few other aspects, but those are the main I come up with.


Now, if I just needed the best sub-$300 camera and didn't really care about the features/capabilities of camera's in the $700.00 range, your recommendation of the A70 would certainly be worth looking into.

But only a st00pid n00b would show up to a Little League baseball game with a wiffle bat! ;) My interest in the G3 is to take me as close to D-SLR without jumping into the Major League Professional price bracketing - and I don't want to buy a noob camera, then a intermediate, then a professional. I'm quite fine with a high end Prosumer and then jump to Professional IF I ever exhaust the capabilities or certain features of the G3. Being that many reputable review sites regard the G3 as an excellent Professional backup camera, I have no doubt it will carry me from n00b to Prosumer n00b with ease. :D

I've placed the order and should receive the Powershot G3 & Lenses on Saturday! :D

I'm surprised at how many accessories (lenses/flashes/adapters/filters) I can use for this which are standard hardware for other cameras! Some pretty nice Telephoto accessories to keep me interested in the gadget side alone for quite some time! ;)

I'm by no means a camera expert, but several of my coworkers have been MAJORLY bitten by the digital photography bug (which is understandable for a couple of them since their graphic artists and can use a lot of this stuff.) They all started off with G2-level cameras, but QUICKLY outgrew those and are now neck deep in the digital SLR world. Their interest level sounded almost identical to what you're saying now. I understand your logic, but after seeing what they (and several of the people on the forums they hang out at) have gone through I'd personally say just skip the baby steps since you have a fair amount of knowledge on the subject and jump straight into an entry-level SLR camera even if it means waiting to save up and pay a bit more. When they started the habit is was mucho expensive (and still is by no means cheap.) But prices have dropped considerably since then and with cameras like the 10D coming up you can great deals on used digital SLRs which still offer amazing options and quality. They're always moaning now about how cheap you can get the stuff they paid $2,000+ for now that it's dropped to less than half that price in many cases.

Edit: Doh! Just saw that you ordered a G3. Oh well. They're very good cameras. Have fun! That stuff's addictive.

Auto pilot.

That's what I like about the cam. It takes great pix left to its own devices. When I have the time to do time to use manual, the fun begins!
