Team AnandTech Distributed Computing Members are holding an auction of Distributed Computing resources with all proceeds to benefit the Dave McOwen Defense Fund.

We would like to invite everyone to participate in this auction!

Team AnandTech's members as well as several generous donations from other teams have allowed us to amass what we call a PowerPot of computing power currently in excess of 100 GigaHertz!! The winning bidder wins the use of this massive amount of power for 7 days for any Distributed Computing project they desire (except where noted in the individual system inventory list). For a current inventory of systems in the PowerPot, and to contribute, please see the first post in the following link:

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview.cfm?catid=39&threadid=666055

The complete Rules of the auction are posted at the end of this message.

In order to raise the largest amount of money possible for Dave McOwen's defense, we challenge you... no, we DARE you to BID and also to add your donations to the PowerPot (however, donating resources is not a requirement to bid). TA members have already donated over 100 Ghz. of raw power. Over a seven day period this translates to approximately:

2,900 Seti WorkUnits :Q
751,191 RC5 WorkUnits :Q
482,426 OGR WorkUnits :Q
48,279 ECCp WorkUnits :Q

In addition, KifArU has generously offered to retire 1,134,000 RC5 blocks and [/b]5000[/b] OGR wu's to the highest personal bidder over $500, or to the highest team bid that exceeds $1000 (should the winner's project of choice be RC5 or OGR). Also, mechBgon will donate his 795,270 RC5 blocks, and all of his OGR-24 and OGR-25 blocks to the pot should the winning bidder have interest in them. (OGR stats are currently down. I'll update the number later.)

So we're not talking about small change, folks! :)

It's all for a good cause: helping one of our own!

Please people, let's make this auction a success. Dave's life literally depends on it. Dig deep. Pool your funds together with other like-minded team-mates. It's certainly not like you'll go away empty handed and there are plenty of GHz to go around to all members of a mini-team!

Why should you give generously? I'll give you just one good reason out of many: I know in my heart that Dave would do everything within his power to help me were I to find myself in the same situation. As he would any one of you.

Dave is an honorable man. Let's all do the honorable thing.

==========================================

Auction Rules:

1) Bidding is currently open to anyone. In order to place a bid, bidders MUST have an AnandTech forum account as that is where the bidding will take place.

2) Bidding will officially start at noon EST (5:00 PM GMT) on Sunday, January 6th and run for 7 days, ending the following Sunday, January 13th at noon EST (5:00 PM GMT). Donations to the PowerPot will continue to be accepted during the bidding period.

2) Bids may be made by an individual, a mini-team of bidders, or a team.

3) A team or mini-team must select a representative who will submit the bids on behalf of the members of his/her team. The representatives of the team or mini-teams will be the only individuals that will post their current team's bid total to the bidding thread. All individuals bidding will post by themselves to the bidding thread.

4) Bidding will be Public and will be tallied at an official Team AnandTech Forum thread to be made public at the start.

5) At the close of 7 days of bidding, the winning individual, mini-team, or team of bidders has 10 days to forward a minimum of 75% of their total winning bid to the publicly announced addresses for the Dave McOwen Defense Fund and MUST notify the designated TA Representative that the money has been forwarded. PowerPot systems will be awarded at that time. The remaining 25% balance must be received no later than 4 days after that. If it is not received in that time frame, the systems will be stood down until the remaining 25% is received.

6) If 75% of the winning bid is not received within 10 days, (without extremely good reason) then the next highest bidder will be awarded the PowerPot and thus will have 10 days to submit 75% of their winning bid, and four days to donate the balance.

This 75% Rule will greatly encourage all individuals and team members, to get those winning bid funds to the Dave McOwen Defense Fund as quickly as possible to benefit Dave and his family. It would be awesome if we could get 100% of the winning funds to Dave ASAP after the bidding is over!!

7) It is the responsibility of the winning bidder to communicate with all owners of the systems in the PowerPot and to instruct them on how to install the appropriate clients on their individual machines. Please note that some systems in the PowerPot have restrictions as to which clients can be run because of networking problems, or other circumstances that may prevent a particular client from being executed on a particular system.

8) All available assistance (within reason) will of course be provided by Team AnandTech members to the winner.

I owe more than just a little thanks to medic for his suggestions and all his wonderful help with this undertaking so far. :)

OD,

I would like to propose one exception to the requirement that the bidder be a current member of one of the TA DC Teams and that is for sfaok. He donated resources to the auction so I think if he would like he should be allowed to bid.

Of course it won't matter cause I intend to win ;)

I personally believe you should offer a certain amount of WU's in the auction rather than computing time. This is mainly because we cant guarantee that everyone can deliver a computer running 24/7 without powering off or a crash.

It would probably be better for the big projects to quote the amount of WU's we will work towards.

Just a random thought... (may save a lawsuit or something knowing our luck)

I already put the word out when we announced it, but it really didn't generate any interest :(

I will however continue to try in the hope that we can raise a ton of money!

[edit] Posted it over at DSLR [/edit]

I may have stirred up the hornets nest finally :D

It looks like someone in DSLR has taken an interest in bidding.

Look Here

Now this will probably mean it will cost me more to get the power, oh well it's for a good cause ;)

They must be pretty worried if they need our CPU time as well as their own. ;)

Updated the approximate prize amount. Also added an addendum to rule #2 that donations will continue to be accepted for the PowerPot during the bidding period.

Less the 23 hours to go.

Countdown!!

Less than 11 hours to go :D

Might be a good time to start counting your pennies, consider starting threads to start mini-pools, or keep them hush/hush through PM's......Hmmm...strategize!

Can't let DSLR take our own power can we????? :Q

I don't know if you caught it in the other thread, but I'll add a dual Xeon 700mhz 2mb cache to the pot. Each CPU averages 5hr30min WU. :)
