Powerline network

I got two Netgear XE102s and they worked great for weeks. I had one plugged into the power outlet on the right wall from my pc because it didn't work plugged in the outlet above where my computer surge protector is plugged into. So a few days ago it just stopped working. The power did go out as well. Anyways after some trouble shooting I found out my surge protector was causing this problem. If I plug the cable modem directly in the wall and unplug the surge protector it will work. I have tried switching surge protectors. I even exchanged the two XE102s for a XE102 and a WGX102. The problem still persists. There is a plug in to the far left of the wall where the surge protector is plugged in. I can get an extension cord and have the surge protector plugged in that one to see if it makes a difference. However it doesn't make sense why it went from working fine to not working at all. If I plug in the XE102 in the plug in where the surge protector is plugged in and unplug the surge protector it works but slower than using the plug in the right wall and yes I am plugging the powerline network directly in the wall.

How can I fix this problem?

I do plan to get a wifi adapter in my room so maybe I can try the xe102 in my room to see if it works.

However I dunno when that will be and Staples only gives you two weeks to return an item.

So I need some suggestions. What would cause this?
