PowerLine Experience?

I moved into a new 3 flat apartment, and my den doesn't have a cable jack for the cable modem. My cable modem currently sits next to my entertainment system connected to my Microsoft 11g router (wireless only turned on when I use it) which is connected to my replay tv, PS2, and my work laptop (when I need it).

My problem is that I have some issues wirelessly connecting my (1) XP and (1) Mandrake box in my den to my what would be always on wireless router, especiall since I'm 10 ft from the street in a very busy Chicago neighborhood. I know the security has gotten better with WPA, but with the possibility of me being on the road for work, other household users won't have the security 'know how' to keep things locked down if I was hacked.

What is everyone's experience with PowerLine? Any other suggestions/recommendations that I should do?

Powerline is great! I have 2 Speedstream adapters, 1 connected to my router on the 2 fl and another connected to a switch in the basement. The PCs in the basement can connect in the 4-7 Mbps range, which is better that I was getting via wireless.

Any idea if a UPS w/ a line conditioner that is hooked up to the same outlet will cause any problems with this technology?

Yes, powerline networking is GREAT !! That's the way my network is set up, and we get 150 kb/s transfer speeds. If you do decide to get them, get these.

Does powerline have some sort of encryption so people on the same power grid can't receive your signals?

DHCP will work through this? I may buy this from newegg, try it out and if it doesn't work I'll send it back.

FLAWLESSLY. But one word of caution, when you got the box, THROW AWAY THE DRIVER CD. DO NOT worry about the whole password thing, its useless, and when I installed that, everything went out the window and I had to take them back, but good thing Newegg's service is top notch, so they just sent me new ones. 🙂

If these powerlines are pretty much interconnected through the grid, can you network across like houses or neighbors hoods?

Would recommend powerline for a small business? It sounds like there's no power interference issues at all.
