Just wondering if anyone could help clarify. I am going to install a power leap adapter in my p4 willamette slot and stick a new northwood chip in there. But because there are like 3 different versions of the northwood, I don't understand how high I can go. Obviously I want to go as high as possible, as I want to get the most bang for buck.

PLEASE don't tell me to get a new computer!

There are 3 versions of the northwood. 400mhz , 533mhz, 800mhz (FSB.) My question is, because my mother board has a 400mhz FSB does that limit me to the the 400 mhz northwoods which only go up to 2.8? Or can I stick a 533mhz chip in clocked at 3.06? Will it just force the chip to run at 400mhz or how does it work?

Has anyone actually done this and had success?

Thanks so much for any advice, I really appreciate it guys!

You are limited to 400mhz FSB chips as your motherboard will not support a higher bus speed and the powerleap adaptor will not change that, also make sure your dell will post / rec. a nothwood processor even w/ a powerleap adaptor. and good luck.

Tomshardware has done something similar. It will work.

The maximum is a 2.8Ghz / 400 FSB. However, those are ultra rare. 2.6 Ghz / 400 FSB are rare too, the best bet would probably be a 2.4 Ghz / 400 FSB

So I ordered a 2.6ghz 400mhz cpu from new egg. Should be here by tomorrow, I doubt anyone here cares, but I will post how it goes. I'm hoping I will be able to play doom 3 with atleast some fancy stuff on when I get this new cpu in. Because right now, Doom 3 PWNS my crappy willamette.

I wonder how the bottle neck will work as far as video cards go? I have a 4x agp slot, and I will have 768mb of pc800 RDRAM. I bet the benchmarks for this setup are pretty rare -heh..

Grabbed a sound blaster 2 audigy ZS as well, so I should have a decent computer if all goes well.....

Thanks for the help guys, really appreciate it!

Incase anyone is curious about doing this. It was very simple, I pulled out the old chip, stuck the adapter on, put some paste on the new chip, popped it in, put heatsink/fan on. Fired up the computer, boom! 2.6 willamette! I have a gig of ram now too... for $200 I gave myself the ability to play doom 3 at decent quality...

If anyone has any questions about this power leap deal, feel free to email me.. It really is simple, but if something isn't clear I can help...
